Best bits from San Diego #ComicCon 2014

San Diego Comic Con 2014 was chock-a-block full of television and film stars, directors, showrunners and producers all ready to dish out the best in teasers, trailers, characters, release dates and character reveals to their adoring audiences.

There’s simply too much information to digest from the four day event, so I’m just rounding up the best bits, from the shows I watch to the movies I’m excited about as well as other little tidbits that came out of SDCC!

Game of Thrones

The show storylines and new castings confuse the hell out of me because I still barely know what is happening or who anyone is.

One thing I can get on board with is a reet good blooper reel!

Arrow (The CW)

If you don’t already watch this show then what is wrong with you?! The nicest guy in television and in possession of possibly the most amazing set of abs ever, Stephen Amell, stars as the green-hooded vigilante Arrow aka Oliver McQueen.

Stephen Amell Facebook

Those abs.

The CW show just concluded season two and the cast are currently in the midst of filming season three, for which an awesome action-packed trailer debuted at Comic Con.

After a happy season two ending this trailer promises that things will not be as smooth sailing for the third season, even thought there’s a date for Olicity it also reveals who the Big Bad will be – Ra’s al Ghul. Known as the head of the League of Assassins, most recognisably played by Liam Neeson in The Dark Knight trilogy, executive producer Marc Guggenheim said of the season three villain: “We really wanted our Ra’s to be very different — at least our own Arrow-ified version.”

The Flash (The CW)

A sorta-spin off from Arrow, but as we know a stand alone superhero in his own right, The Flash gets it’s own show starring Grant Gustin (Glee) as the titular character Barry Allen.

As a side note I was a little reluctant at Grant Gustin’s casting purely on the back of how much I hated his character in Glee, but all is forgotten!

Starring in two episodes of Arrow’s last season we saw lots of lovely chemistry between Felicity and Barry before a massive lightning storm set off by a reaction at S.T.A.R Labs causes something to go very wrong with Barry and he disappears from Arrow.

The Flash debuts in October and we won’t have to wait long before there’s a crossover episode between the two shows, episode 108 and episode 308 respectively, but Felicity will be first to crossover into Central City in episode four without her right-hand man.

The audience at the panel got a sneak peek at the pilot (which I’ve also seen and it’s freakin’ awesome) and here’s the trailer for the show:

Teen Wolf (MTV)

Another fantastic show that bares no relation whatsoever to the Michael J Fox movies apart from it’s name.

MTV are doing really well with their original scripted shows and this has just been renewed for season five and we’re only half way through season four. Great news for the Teen Wolf cast which includes Tyler Posey as alpha werewolf Scott McCall, Dylan O’Brien as his human BFF Stiles, and the rest of the ragtag bunch include Holland Roden as banshee Lydia, werecoyote Malia played by Shelley Hennig, beta werewolf Derek Hale played by Tyler Hoechlin, Arden Cho as Kitsunay (basically a fox) Kira and JR Bourne as the hunter Chris Argent.

The last season saw several big losses from the main cast as they got killed off and basically asked to leave the show to pursue other roles. Fair play to them but it meant that season four has given the writers the chance to revisit some of the more fun elements of the earlier seasons when Scott was just learning to deal with his new life as a wolf with this time new cast member Dylan Sprayberry as the newbie.

During the Comic Con panel they released a freaking brilliant mid-season trailer that promises so much I could not be more excited!

The Maze Runner (20th Century FOX)

Yet another movie based on a series of young adult books, you may groan, but I read them and couldn’t put them down. They are that good.

Here the movie stars Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien as Thomas, a boy who wakes up after having his memory erased surrounded by a group of boys who live in The Glade. He soon finds out that they are trapped by a maze and will need to escape with his fellow ‘runners’.

Every 30 days in The Glade a boy is delivered via the lift shaft and Thomas was expected, but the next day a girl, Teresa played by Kaya Scodelario (Skins), is delivered and everything changes.

The movie also stars another Brit, Will Poulter, who is definitely on the rise in Hollywood! During the panel Dylan accidentally revealed a massive spoiler when asked by the audience what his hardest scene was to film, but to be fair if the fans of the books were there they’d know it anyway!

The Vampire Diaries (The CW)

The Vampire Diaries is heading towards it’s sixth season and *spoiler alert* season five saw the demise of main cast stars Ian Somerhalder’s Damon and Kat Graham’s Bonnie, they went into that bright white light on the other side with no way back.

I have to admit this show annoys me somewhat, it took me a few episodes to really love it in season one and then I was enamoured by the show. Then every season since sees it have a good opener then it dips so low beyond bad that I always come close to giving up on it, then just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse someone dies (but probably always comes back to life) and then it gets good just for a crazy season finale.

I think some shows that have a long run of around 22-24 episodes per season will always struggle to keep the action and storylines above average and so this is expected and which is why I always end up coming back.

Anyway panel for this show had all the cast present from Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, the return of Matt Davis as fan-favourite Alaric, AND Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham. So they’re not going to stay dead for long then (dammit).

Here’s the very funny trailer they debuted, a possible Damon-Bonnie spinoff? I don’t think so:

#Spideradcliffe

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe was at Comic Con this year to appear on the panel for his new movie Horns, which looks brilliant.

But that wasn’t his only appearance… He shared a picture to his Google+ page of him dressed in full Spiderman costume hitting the show floor! Well done Spideradcliffe you fooled everyone, not sure Andrew Garfield would be too happy… Haha!

DanRad spiderman 2 DanRad spiderman

Batman v Superman

At last year’s Comic Con they announced this epic superhero battle and now Dawn of Justice debuted it’s cast on the panel, and they didn’t utter a single word. Director Zack Snyder was worried the audience would ask too many questions so didn’t let stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill or Gal Gadot speak at all!

And according to Collider editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub, Ben Affleck actually walked the show floor with no security and not one person recognised him. Way to go incognito Batfleck!

What we did get though was an awesome image of Gal Gadot in full costume as Wonder Woman. I love how they’re sticking with the gritty theme and have discarded that traditional red, blue and gold costume we all know and love. Instead it’s all dark burgundy leather and warrior-like. Love it.

Gal Gadot

Mad Max

The first trailer for prequel Mad Max: Fury Road debuted at Comic Con and it looked suitably apocalyptic. The cast including Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Zoe Kravitz spent months in Namibia, South Africa filming giving the desert backdrop a hellishly authentic feel.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

The first sighting of Jennifer Lawrence‘s heroine Katniss in this full teaser trailer. Note that we’ve had two teasers, less than 30 seconds long, then we have the first teaser trailer which is just one minute long. I reckon we’ll get another couple of teaser trailers, before a full length trailer which could potentially last more than two minutes, by that time I will be more annoyed by the way marketing departments are dribbling out these multiple trailers instead of just releasing one or two. Grrr.

Red Carpet: Elizabeth Banks Catching Fire promo tour round-up

I’m not sure I can love Elizabeth Banks any more. She came in at number two on my Best Dressed List of 2012 last year for her amazing promo tour for the first Hunger Games movie and it looks like she may just be featured again!

She absolutely smashed it for Catching Fire and there’s no wonder, with Jason Wu, Elie Saab, Alexander McQueen, Versace and Jenny Packham on the list of red carpet designers Elizabeth could simply not fail.

It was nice to see that Elizabeth embraced the colour again, mirroring the yellow hue she wore in London at last year’s premiere, she picked a cut out neon yellow Jason Wu Resort gown that was to die for.

Absolute stand out for me from Elizabeth was her first Elie Saab gown of the tour in Berlin. You couldn’t possibly go wrong in Elie Saab and this gown was nothing short of epic.

The rest of  her looks were all kinds of amazing and gorgeous, so I couldn’t possibly put them in an order! With the delicious orange Versace at the LA premiere, the Alexander McQueen feather detailed dress in Paris and just to shake everything up for her last outing a Jenny Packham embellished jumpsuit at the NYC premiere.

Red Carpet: Jennifer Lawrence Catching Fire promo tour round-up

I went to see The Hunger Games Catching Fire last night, it was pretty damn good. There was so much action and it really played out like the book, minus a few things but I’m not going to nit pick because I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it that much that I was blindsided when it ended because I, and I’m guessing a lot of others, read the three books all in one go so could not even begin to remember where the actual ending was!

As always my favourite part of a big blockbuster movie coming out is of course the promo tour, and if the movie has big stars we’re more likely to see some amazing outfits. And this was definitely the case when it came to every single Catching Fire premiere.

There was a lot of Dior from Jennifer Lawrence, which I admit, didn’t always work but somehow she managed to pull her looks off with the help of stunning make up and that fresh new hair cut. There was a lot of contention when it came to Jennifer’s hair cut as there always is in Hollywoodland because we are so used to seeing long wavy <insert hair colour here> extensions hair and barely any variety. Yes I agree I think Jennifer looked beautiful with long, luscious hair, she was a modern day bombshell with it, but she still is a bombshell with short hair so nothing has changed apart from her looking a bit more edgy and youthful!

I digress, there was a smattering of other designers such as Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and Proenza Schouler at the photocalls and after parties, but exclusively Dior on the red carpets. From London, Berlin, Madrid, Rome, Paris and back to LA premiere Jennifer showcased so many different looks.

My stand out moment was at the Paris premiere, after a disappointing world premiere dress in London she (and her beauty team) were inspired to create this outstanding edgy but chic look. I mentioned in my previous post on the London world premiere how I would have loved to see Jennifer in this dress but in a different colour, I suppose you can’t have both but I was glad she did wear this in the end.

My next favourite was the LA gown, the sheer trend sees absolutely no signs of waning and those who hate it are just going to have to get over it. This gown showed the playful, sexy Jennifer we all know and love with the choppy hair and pink lipstick she totally pulls it off without going to far over to the Kristen Stewart side..

I’m still divided on this being the best dress for Jennifer, but I can’t help but like the beaded detailing it just lifts the dress, and I think the hair wasn’t necessarily as good as it could have been, I guess they were trying out looks to gauge reaction.

I do like this Dior dress coat at the Berlin premiere, and the detailing is divine, but I couldn’t help feeling a little underwhelmed. Although it did inspire me to go and buy this ASOS tuxedo inspired dress.

These were all the dresses that just left me a bit meh. The first Dior at the Madrid premiere reminded me a lot of her SAG Awards dress, it could almost pass for how her dress would have turned out if her gown had actually ripped like everyone imagined. The second creamy yellow dress annoyed me, because for a long time I kept cleaning my computer screen thinking I had a smudge on it. And I guess the third half jacket dress half crop top was edgy for NYC but just no where near as appealing as her others.

Red Carpet: The Hunger Games Catching Fire UK World Premiere

The Hunger Games Catching Fire world premiere took place in London on Monday, with the stars of the film walking the red carpet for the adoring fans and fashion fiends.

I thought for one moment that because of the usual cold and rainy weather the celebrities would be wearing coats and covering up but Jennifer Lawrence soon disrobed her tomato red coat to reveal another Dior gown.

This time it was from the Christian Dior Couture 2013 show, look 13, a white silk gown bedecked with multicoloured sequins. It features a high neckline with a wrap around backless section and a lose cape-like detail. Personally I wouldn’t have picked this for Jennifer but she is working the hell out of it even if it does give her an odd figure, and I’m growing towards the hair. If I had my pick of the Dior Couture collection I would have mixed look 48 with the amazing colour of look 51.

dior couture jlawElizabeth Banks is my second favourite thing about The Hunger Games and she didn’t disappoint with her return to form in a gorgeous cut out detailed Jason Wu Resort 2014 gown, modified from the original black to a bold neon yellow colour. It seems the actress favours a yellow hue as she also wore the colour at last year’s Hunger Games premiere in London when she picked a beautiful Bill Blass creation. I expect to see more amazing looks from Elizabeth Banks as the press tour rolls on, I hope it will be as good as last year. And for Jennifer Lawrence will anything ever top that gold Prabal Gurung gown she wore now that she seems to be dressing exclusively in Dior – I hope she doesn’t turn into a Natalie Portman bore.

Dylan O’Brien cast in The Maze Runner, plus Teen Wolf Season Three Promo

It looks like I’ve found another young adult series to get my teeth into after finishing the Michael Grant Gone series.

Any excuse to remind people I have met him and he's a good hugger.

Any excuse to remind people I have met him (yes I am crazy) and he’s a good hugger.

Deadline reports that Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien has been cast as Thomas the lead from the dystopian book The Maze Runner.

I’ve never heard of this series, but the brief premise is Thomas plays the main character who wakes up inside a maze with no memory of his previous life. Soon discovering that there are other boys who have all been dropped into the maze they live in the The Glade an encampment in the centre.

It sounds Hunger Games-esque purely because they have to survive the maze and the weird half creatures that threaten them. But I think I’m already interested to know what happens especially when there are already four books to get my teeth into.

The movie is to begin filming in May, directed by Wes Ball, it co-stars Skins actress Kaya Scodelario who has been quietly making a name for herself in Hollywood after starring in Wuthering Heights, Now is Good with Dakota Fanning and Emmanuel and the Truth about Fishes with Jessica Biel which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Also starring in The Maze Runner is Will Poulter who we’ve seen in The Chronicles of Narnia, The Son of Rambow and television series School of Comedy.

With a crop of British talent and the very funny Dylan O’Brien taking on his first serious lead role, I hope that it will be successful. If the first movie does well I assume that their contracts will include filming the whole trilogy which to any actor is always a good thing to have in the bag.

Now hurry up Teen Wolf, June 3 is a long way away!

BRAND NEW Trailer: Hunger Games Catching Fire

The very first thing I did this morning was watch the brand new teaser trailer that debuted at the MTV Movie Awards in the US last night.

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in a still from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in a still from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games Catching Fire is the next movie in the trilogy (or quadrilogy if the last movie is to be split) and sees our heroine Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return to their district amongst fanfare, but then as they go on a tour of the other districts the beginning of the uprisings is evident.

Something must be done about them and President Snow (Donald Sutherland) insists they be killed off. The trailer is dark a great representation of what the second book in the series is like, the people of the districts are desperate and they use Katniss as a beacon of hope which in turn puts her life and those closest to her in great danger.

Young Adult Books: Hopeless

Hopeless book

Ever since I read The Hunger Games series I became familiar with the term ‘young adult’. It’s the category for books that are not quite young enough for children, and apparently too old for adults.

I forget to class myself as an adult, in my mind I still like to pretend I’m younger than I am which probably attracts me to reading YA books.

They may sound lame to some people, but I can’t not read books and sometimes YA books are so much more imaginative and definitely less serious than all your ‘adult’ books out there.

I recently read a YA book called Hopeless, after literally reading the first paragraph of The Madam Editor’s blog post on it I went and downloaded it to my Kindle, and for 77p there’s no excuse not to buy it and try it for yourself.

It’s a love story (who isn’t a sucker for one of those?!), about a girl called Sky and a boy named Holder.

Sky is a 17-year-old girl about to embark upon her first year in high school after being home schooled by her mother. She has a best friend named Six, and their friendship although only briefly focused on in the first few chapters of the book is as appealing as the love story. Six is leaving to study abroad for a year in Italy, meaning Sky will have to cope with the first taste of public school all on her own.

What is poignantly unique about Sky, and as a 17-year-old in the 21st century, is she doesn’t own a piece of technology. Her adoptive mother Karen, insists she hates in and doesn’t see the need for it, so that’s no television, no mobile phone, no laptop, no internet. She doesn’t even know what LOL means. But Sky doesn’t even let this phase her unlike most teenagers, she is different from the rest and already has somewhat of a reputation by association which she doesn’t let bother her.

As the book unfold over days, we see the relationship with Holder come to focus. As she has a mysterious encounter with him at a grocery store you just know there is more to his personality smouldering good looks. Sky knows it too and after another chance meeting with him she, who never really has found a connection with a boy before becomes enamoured with him.

It is a refreshingly honest yet intense relationship, many could draw similarities between Hopeless and the Twilight novels, what with the high school setting and the mysteriousness of Holder. But it stops there, it is just better and real.

Although a YA book it contains some very hot and heavy make out sessions, including the best first kiss in the history of kisses. Colleen Hooper narrates the book with extra chapters dating back ‘Thirteen Years Later’ which you know are just a major part of the story as it gradually comes to it’s pretty much unbelievable if not slightly over the top climax.

A lot of interesting subjects are covered, but to reveal those would be to reveal they mystery surrounding Holder and Sky’s relationship and just what he knows about her past that even she didn’t realise was there deep down in the recesses of her mind.

I really enjoyed this book, and read it within a few days, an easy read that will have you guessing (in my case incestuously wrong) right until the very end.
