Twilight: Kristen Stewart

It’s been an odd year for Kristen Stewart, everyone will remember the scandal of the summer that cast a shadow over the impending last Twilight movie. Would her and Rob appear together reconciled or would it be a series of awkward red carpet appearances and separate hotels rooms where they couldn’t be seen in a room together?

Kristen in Vanity Fair July 2012

Kristen’s year started promisingly enough, a couture photo shoot in Paris with Karl Lagerfeld behind the lens for Vanity Fair to promote Snow White and the Huntsman, appearances on the press tour of her indie movie On the Road in Cannes and rather shockingly a number one spot on Glamour UK magazine’s Best Dressed of 2012.

I re-read the above post, and I was not happy. I chuckled to myself, because really Kristen is one of those people akin to Marmite. She has good days that everyone loves what she wears, she has days where you get where she was going with it and divides the critics and then she has really bad days which usually outweigh the good especially when she isn’t on a promo tour for a movie.

I used to really detest Kristen, she used to come across like she didn’t care that she was this person that younger girls looked up to especially when Twilight first came out. You could see how much she hated been on that red carpet, giving interviews and just generally attempting to be a pleasant person. Remember when she came out with this when giving an interview to Elle UK in 2010, when talking about the papparazzi:

“The photos are so … I feel like I’m looking at someone being raped,” she tells Britain’s Elle magazine. “A lot of the time I can’t handle it.”

Ugh, we know how horrible it is but as the argument goes, as an actor/actress part of your job is being in the public eye. You use the media to promote your movies, perfumes when you need to so it has to work both ways. Privacy is no longer yours if you flaunt yourself in front of the camera, especially with a married director *ahem*.

After this ugly quote, and over the past year I have to admit Kristen has become happier in front of the camera, she is more open when answering questions, she is still awkward because that is who she probably is, and of course has grown up even though she is still only 22.

Yes she was born in 1990, and even though she has been acting since around 10 she is still so so young. It seems that Hollywood likes to age people in the movie industry, just take the Fanning sisters, Elle 14, and Dakota 18, they have been around for what seems an age yet they are still in education.

But Kristen is a hot commodity in the industry and although some thought her turn as a “trampire” would hurt her image I really don’t think it has. Not one bit. She cheated on Edward Rob, and the media thought it was the end of the world, he seemed to have gotten over it in time for the Twilight promo tour, and everyone went home happy.

When Kristen isn’t on the red carpet her uniform of scruffy trainers, knotted tee and jacket with an optional trucker cap (I mean who genuinely wears those anymore?!) is hideous when compared to the likes of Miranda Kerr and Victoria Beckham, but they are full-time celebrities devoted to their look, Kristen works best when she has a stylist on hand to tell her to put the trainers down and wear the heels…

Here are my favourite Kristen moments on the Twilight Saga red carpet, my ultimate favourite has to be the Reem Acra but then I absolutely loved her Louis Vuitton black and white playsuit in Tokyo.

Comic-Con 2011 (spoilers)

So it appears my tickets got lost in the post this year, maybe next year…

Instead I spent some (I won’t say most or all because this would be lame) of the weekend monitoring Twitter for Comic-Con updates, so easy when people hash tag or you know specific users that were there. My favourite being @cadlymack a writer for television/movie site Zap2it, I was directed to her through a fellow (US) tv lover, she has a dog named Pacey who is adorable and that may say everything about her (loves Dawson’s Creek obvs) and she is like best buds with all the cast in the Vampire Diaries so cool.

A little Pacey-aside, that was the Funny or Die video that Josh Jackson did at last year’s Comic Con. But once again if you’re not a fan of Dawson’s Creek I’m afraid you just won’t GET IT.

Right on with it…

Fringe – At the end of the last season we effectively see Peter disappear. As in he no longer exists. WTF was my reaction after the season finale but at the Comic Con panel Josh Jackson reassured the fans that he had plenty to do whilst dressed as an Observer… Perhaps as this is the only way he could exist outside of time? (See the very end of the video below)

Supernatural – I massively gasped at hearing Alona Tal was returning as Jo, when we all saw her die in Season 5… Although we did get a glimpse of how life could have been with Ellen and Jo still alive in Season 6 episode My Heart Will Go On. Jared Padelecki talked about how difficult it was playing Soulless Sam, Demon-blood Sam and the recovering normal Sam and how Jensen Ackles is like Dean only in the way they both “air-guitar all the time”. J-squared banter I. Love. It.

Vampire Diaries – What’s in store for Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Caroline (Candice Accola)… Ian Somerhalder replies with “Puppies… little vampire puppies”. I switched my allegiance from Stefan to Damon half way through the last season (or is that from Paul Wesley to Ian Somerhalder after I found out the former was married to Torrey deVitto aka Melissa PLL) and so I’m dying for an Elena/Damon hook up but as it’s reported at Comic Con they are too preoccupied with finding Stefan who has gone on a bloody hunt with Klaus boohoo.

Ringer – Sarah Michelle Gellar returns. Yes one of the newly scheduled shows for the Fall Premiere season, is Ringer a show about stolen identity. It looks so good I’m already addicted and that’s only from the trailer, and an extended version was shown at Comic Con. My favourite line being: “Siobhan we have a problem, Bridget’s still alive”. Oooo cannot wait.

True Blood – Apart from witches, Eric losing his memory there’s THAT shower scene. The one from the book with Eric and Sookie together at last, no more Bill (woo). And if you’re watching TB as it is on in the US, you will have seen the near naked torso of Alcide (Joe Manganiello) and the near naked torso of Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) in the same scene *faints*.

Mmm...

So that’s a bit from television, now for the movies. My first “oh well that’s not what I expected” comes in the form of the posters from  Snow White and the Huntsman, featuring Kristen Stewart in full body armour and holding a sword. A SWORD? No red lips and short people whistling while they work in this movie… Unlike the rival movie Snow White featuring Lily Collins as the damsel in distress, which one are you going to be a fan of? When I first heard Kristen Stewart was to be cast as Snow White I think smoke may have come out of my ears, but now seeing the posters and the way the film looks I think I could get on board, maybe its the sickly sweet look of Lily Collins that’s putting me off.

Kristen Stewart as Snow White

Lily Collins as Snow White

Kristen Stewart was at Comic Con along with all the cast from Twilight, there to promote part four of the series Breaking Dawn Part 1. A lot of love went out to Kristen, Rob and Taylor obviously, some questionable looks coming from Rob’s half shaven head and Kristen’s usual lack of making an effort. Some of the honeymoon scenes were shown from the movie, I don’t want to hunt them out myself as I’d like them to be a surprise for when I turn up at the midnight showing of the November release (geek). I’ve seen an image of the honeymoon, with Edward and Bella in the water near a waterfall… don’t remember that being mentioned in the book.

The official ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ trailer was premiered at the Comic Con panel, I watched it and felt strangely transported to 2002. Yes the new reboot seems serious, less Toby Maguire-comical more Andrew Garfield-moody with a pinch of Emma Stone-delight thrown in. But it still looks the same. The same suit, the same backdrop, with a slightly different way of Peter Parker getting bitten by that elusive spider. There is no way to really change up Spider-Man once it’s already been done, this seems to be a “re-do” of the Toby Maguire series that it will inevitably be compared to. Hopefully the sequel will head in a different direction if Gwen Stacy is the main love interest and the villain is different? I’m not entirely convinced, but I will still go and see it. (Also the beginning of the trailer eludes to Peter’s parents and why they had to leave him, maybe potential side plot?)

Cowboys and Aliens had its world premiere over the Comic Con weekend, all the stars turned up for the show and some critics thought it was a “crowd-pleasing summer movie with more wit than most” whilst others were not so appreciative of all the cowboys and aliens in the same film together “[it has] a clumsy touch and zero feel for the intangibles of classic movie westerns”. Now I’m not a fan of westerns, the nearest possible one to the genre I have watched was Wild Wild West with Will Smith and we all know how that played out. It annoys me that a film associated with the name Speilberg should be a reason to go and see it so I’ve been looking for a reason not to go and Robbie Collin (former employee of NOTW) gave me a great one:

Golden Globes 2011: A disappointment?

I was not impressed this year, out of all the celebrities that attended there were very few dresses that could be considered best dressed. The Golden Globes are the awards where actresses are expected to go out of their comfort zone be a bit more daring seeing as though it’s not as restricting as the Oscars, many chose to stick to styles they’d worn before, black, or plain designs. I was expecting a real extravaganza and what I got was disappointment.

I was really looking forward to seeing what Michelle Williams wore, nominated for Best Actress I thought she would pull out all the stops. In the run up to the Golden Globes, Williams has been sporting a uniform of lace, knee length 50’s skirts, and cap-sleeves, there was a break from that at the Critics’s Choice Awards where she wore a pretty white Balenciaga number. It seems she wanted to stick with the pretty and went for a daisy floral print dress by Valentino, to me its unflattering and a bit plain, more suited to a casual dinner than a fancy awards ceremony.  A big fat 2/10 because I like her hair and make up.

Natalie Portman beat out Williams to win Best Actress for her role in The Black Swan, a deserved award as the film is absolutely fantastic. Surprisingly Portman didn’t wear Dior or Rodarte as tipped but instead chose a pale pink Viktor & Rolf gown that I really didn’t like. The big red rose at the empire line of her dress just didn’t sit well on top of her pregnant belly, but at least she was showing it off. A 3/10 for the cute baby bump but overall I don’t think the pink and red colour clash sits well.

Someone that didn’t disappoint me was Emma Stone, nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy unfortunately lost out to Annette Benning, wore a peach backless dress by Calvin Klein. Not a designer that I would think of for the fancy red carpet but works really well, a super streamlined dress with ice blonde locks and a sexy back is a good look in my books, although Emma may have gone a little overboard on the fake tan. A definite 9/10, an actress who is a strong player in the style stakes.

Winner of Best Performance in a Mini Series for her work in Temple Gradin, Clare Danes also wore Calvin Klein Collection. A luminous pink halter neck gown, really spiced up the red carpet amongst a sea of black and beads. Again a really flawless look from Calvin Klein, Clare was deserving of her win. An 8/10 for pink perfection.

Emerald green was a popular colour with both Angelina Jolie and Mila Kunis wearing Atelier Versace and Vera Wang respectively. It has being reported that Angie laughed when she heard of her nomination in the Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for The Tourist. Presenter Ricky Gervais threw down when he said of the rumour about the nominations for The Tourist, “I’d like to crush this ridiculous rumor that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so that the foreign press could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That was not the only reason; they also accepted bribes.”

Angie did look stunning in colour a definite competitor for best dressed of the night, and Mila Kunis looked gorgeous in her Vera Wang gown but I can’t help feeling a little underwhelmed by her look I was expecting something a little more extraordinary. An 8/10 for Angelina and a 6/10 for Mila, maybe she’s waiting to wow at the Oscars?

Two very different actresses sported blunt fringes one was a success the other not so much. Sandra Bullock, on presenting duties this year looked great with her blunt hair cut and Jenny Packham dress, where as Olivia Wilde’s hairdo was more limp and lacklustre but at least her ridiculously over the top Marchesa princess ball gown made up for it. A 7/10 for previous big winner Bullock,  a poor 5/10 for Wilde who was clearly wishing she was sat atop a castle than presenting the award for Best Foreign Film alongside the delicious Rob Pattinson.

Then we have the girls with the sex factor, Halle Berry and January Jones. Both actresses not afraid to flash the flesh, they wowed with their barely there dresses. Halle in a black Nina Ricci dress, channelling the underwear as outwear trend it was daring and maybe a little trashy but totally worth it to get those column inches. And then January in THAT red Versace dress from the Spring 2011 RTW collection, she suits the dress and January definitely gets my vote as best dressed of the night.

Halle Berry gets an 8.5/10 in Nina Ricci

January Jones 9/10 in Versace

There’s always going to be celebrities who shunned their stylist, aka Helena Bonham Carter (has she ever had one?), the quirky actress wore a Vivienne Westwood  gown with mismatched shoes. Who else could really get away with it? Glamour magazine online even say “Fab rather than faux pas” pah yeh right. Then we have Christina Hendricks, maybe I have it out for her but her vivid red Romona Keveza dress with a massive shoulder ruffle made me wonder where she began and the dress ended! And Julianne Moore I have no words for your Lanvin mess, one sleeved with a necklace tucked under the collar it doesn’t even begin to make sense!

Other worthy mentions go to Leighton Meester who wore a thigh-slashed chiffon Burberry Prorsum gown with the best accessory of the night, a gold box clutch complete with a hanging tassle. Anne Hathaway in a very backless Armani Prive gold sequinned dress with power shoulders and Camilla Belle was spotted at the InStyle/Warner Bros Golden Globes after party in a silver Giorgio Armani dress. Also congratulations goes to Colin Firth for his Best Actor win for his role in The King’s Speech, hopefully a sign of what’s to be expected at the Oscars, and to David Fincher for Best Director and Best Film for The Social Network.

Just an excuse to post hot pictures

So Glamour Magazine released their Top 50 Sexiest Males 2010 list, and boy is it good. What I find quite amusing is the Top 3 are all vampires (kind of). Not that I’m complaining.

Ian Somerhalder #3

Taylor Lautner #2

And the winner is....for a second year running

Those eyes...

Oi you, SMILE!

Jeez louise, why the hell is this girl not brimming ear to ear when RPattz is practically breathing in her ear. She should literally be glowing instead she just seems mildly amused and uninterested. He came to visit her at the set of her new movie On the Road, also starring Rob’s best mate Tom Sturridge, and he soooo happy. Yesss I imagine the gossip columns across the world of showbiz will be claiming that she is seeing Tom behind Rob’s back, STANDARD.

You’re such a nice guy RPattz

I just feel so sorry for Rob Pattinson in this video clip. He just wants to go to wherever he’s going but he’s got a billion papparazzi following him around.

Now I’m a bit 2-sided here, as someone interested both the media and how news is reported I love to hear about what celebrities get up to but this is just awful. To be invaded so much on a daily basis I don’t know how RPattz keeps up this nice guy persona. He’s soooo lovely and cute and pretty and well you know the rest.

Eclipse Review *Contains Spoilers*

After counting down the days until the Eclipse movie came out, I finally saw it last night.

I have a lot to say so bear with me, if you couldn’t care less about the Twilight phenomenon then I suggest you do not read on I will not be offended.

The movie did not fail to live up to my expectations, after a lacklustre and what appeared to be a low-budget Twilight, followed by a “darker” New Moon, Eclipse was action-packed and wrought with an undertone of sexual desire.

Exactly what the fans ordered. Many of the pivotal scenes from the book were included, and a few were added purely for a cinematic purpose and to get the film moving along which I think was fair. I think I’ll just go through a few of the main points I think were good with the film and what went wrong.

Riley

A secondary character that only appears very briefly in the book as the leader of the newborn vampires, he is the oldest by a year and so it appears, in the film, that he takes it upon himself to create an army to fight against the Cullen clan. However for those of you that have read the books then you will know the mastermind is the evil Victoria.

Riley features as a main character, which I think in terms of the film help the audience see the bad side of being a vampire but the added opening scene of how he was turned into a vampire was pathetic and I’m pretty sure that the 12A certificate hindered the chance of it being more gory. But kudos to Xavier Samuel for bringing more brooding angst to the Twilight Saga.

Xavier Samuel as Riley

Dakota Fanning as Jane

I have not always been a fan of Dakota Fanning, as a child actress she did get some big movie roles starring alongside some equally big names, Robert De Niro, Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise, but she always seemed quite a whiny performer. However that’s all changed, she’s grown up into a pretty young girl and as a vampire she absolutely kicks ass.

As a member of the Volturi she plays the part of evil twin Jane to the book. The red eyes and the dark cloak just add to the performance, probably the best in the movie.

The Evil Jane

Virtue

The scene was pivotal in the type relationship that Bella and Edward share, and I’m glad they presented it in exactly the same way as in the book. Edward wants to preserve Bella’s virtue and she just wants to get rid of it like any other normal teenager, however the only way Edward will give in is if she marries him… She agrees (which she does way too easily in the film) and that leads me to:

The Ring

Good God. I don’t really know what I had imagined for the ring but what they came up with was pretty tacky. So I had to refer back to the book to check that the people in charge of costume had it right: “The face was a long oval, set with slanting rows of glittering round stones. The band was gold – delicate and narrow. The gold made a fragile web around the diamonds.”

The engagement ring - something similar to this

Hmm okay then I was wrong, I definitely had in mind a beautiful vintage ring with one large diamond not the one that looked like it came from a discount bin in Claire’s Accessories.

Bryce Dallas Howard vs. Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria

Who was the best Victoria?

Personally I think Rachelle Lefevre was robbed of her role as Victoria, the rumours doing the rounds were that a scheduling conflict was to blame for the reason of Lefevre been replaced by Howard. But as Lefevre said she was “stunned and greatly saddened” to be no longer a part of something she was so “passionate” about. (Summit Entertainment released a statement saying Lefevre withheld her scheduling and the overlap was 10 days she could not be available for, but the movie industry is a tough business so who knows the real ins and outs?)

Anyway, Bryce Dallas Howard is the new Victoria in Eclipse and although she does an okay job I just can’t help thinking it’s odd that she does’t quite fit as the badass that she is supposed to portray in the book. Plus I think she had favour on her side with her dad being the Ron Howard, director of A Beautiful Mind, A Cinderella Man, The Da Vinci Code, and Angels and Demons to name a few.

Minor Scenes

I like that the director still chose to include the minor scenes like, the graduation scene/party, Jacob’s wolf bracelet as a gift to Bella, the flashbacks of Jasper and Rosalie and the infamous tent scene.

Although Rosalie’s flashback was set at a different time than in the book, it still had the effect necessary. How Rosalie had the perfect life and she didn’t actually wish to give it up unlike the very willing Bella. Jasper’s flashback also didn’t happen in the daytime but still we got the backstory of how he knew how to fight newborn’s, and those who have read the book would know the rest of the details that weren’t portrayed on screen.

The tent scene between Jacob/Edward/Bella was as I had imagined in the book, maybe with a smaller tent, but it worked perfectly and RPattz and TayTay did a great job of acting in that scene.

The Wigs

The hair pieces were pretty bad once again, I really don’t understand why they don’t spend the many millions they had for the movie on better hair for the cast. Jasper was the worst culprit, those strawberry blond waves were set at a strange angle and just looked odd, a definite difference than in New Moon. Bella’s long hair was suspiciously full and bouncy compared to the first film where Kristen Stewart still had a full head of limp hair. Rosalie and Alice’s wigs were not too bad but still when you know what they look like in real life you kind of think they would make more of an effort.

Awfully short hair vs. Lovely long hair

Charlie

As Bella’s dad he provided most of the comedy in the film, nearly every scene had him spitting out some humourous comment or sarcastic aside that had the audience in the cinema laughing. Billy Burke I salute your dry delivery.

Overall…

I loved this film, a lot of the scenes I hadn’t even imagined in the book worked amazingly on screen and I think the fight scenes were brilliant. I enjoyed the fact that the secondary cast of Cullens got more lines, especially Jasper as I thik Jackon Rathbone is delicious! And I’m definitely not going to complain about the amount of time Taylor Lautner spent with his top off. I would have, however, enjoyed seeing more of Kellan Lutz’s bare chest but you can’t have everything.

The only thing that really shocked me was how many people in the cinema had not read the books, there was a lot of chatter when Jacob kissed Bella and how Edward was going to react, as well as when Bella said yes to Edward’s proposal. If you had read the books you would have known what was going to happen! Then again maybe there are people in the world that are not drawn into the whole Twilight phenomenon and actually live lives that don’t surround picking the books and films apart. Ahem.
