Met Gala 2014 ‘Charles James: White Tie and Decorations’

This year’s Met Gala theme was in honour of Charles James, a British-born fashion designer known as ‘America’s First Couturier’. So you’d think that the dress code of ‘white tie and decorations’ would be pretty straightforward to follow.

I mean I was expecting so many big puffy ballgowns long sleeve gloves and jewels dripping everywhere. It’s just a shame that so many celebrities flouted the dress code and just treated it like any old red carpet event, I mean I guess I go on about the theme every year, but why is it so seemingly difficult to stick to a simple rule?

There was such a mish-mash of looks for the Met Gala 2014 that I’m not sure where to begin. For some attendees they went all out and worked a ballgown to the max. Sarah Jessica Parker, Arizona Muse and Karolina Kurkova were stand outs for me. From SJP’s over the top hair do, the extravagant graphic print train adorned with Oscar de la Renta’s signature in red and those white gloves; Karolina Kurkova wore the best Marchesa of the night (Katie Holmes looked a hot mess in her yellow confection) of course this gown was made for an event like this, could you imagine it on any other red carpet without people claiming she was being OTT… And Arizona Muse looked beyond perfection in a gorgeous red Ralph & Russo creation from their debut couture collection which I simply adored.

At first I was very much on the fence with Emmy Rossum’s Carolina Herrera gown, it reminded me a lot of Lucy Liu’s Golden Globes 2013 dress which I fell in love with at first sight. This yellow floral design was very much in keeping with the theme and it was very spring-like, so well done Emmy because technically you ticked all the boxes. I really liked Hailee Steinfeld’s Prabal Gurung monochrome dress, but again it struck similarities in shape with Sandra Bullock’s Golden Globes dress from this year, maybe tried and tested works for this designer now but I miss the drama of his RTW collections. Another designer that absolutely sticks to a tried and tested formula is Zac Posen, his signature red carpet gowns are unmistakable, however his teal creation that Liu Wen wore was stunning.

Honourable mention must go to Greta Gerwig who could have easily been missed had it not been for her modern take on couture in her Theory by Olivier Theyskens’ one shoulder monochrome gown. Also to the Topshop girls who worked the theme to a T, with Kendall Jenner, Toni Garn, Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman all looking like sheer perfection in their respective looks. Ever since Topshop created that first stand out Met Gala look for Ginnifer Goodwin in 2011 they’ve just gotten better and better at this event.

Now for those with the best plus ones. The ever flawless and with hands down the best accessory ever (her hubby), Blake Lively. It’s so nice to see her back to her best and also with Ryan Reynolds who so often eschews these types of events. Another couple who worked the magic of the Met Gala red carpet was David and Victoria Beckham in her own custom design. I liked their return to that matchy matchy best because it proves how far they’ve come that they can still rock it without the horrors of the past rearing it’s ugly head. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield also looked adorable on the red carpet together, with Emma in a cute two-piece pink Thakoon look and let’s not forget my absolute faves Josh Jackson and Diane Kruger in a very pretty Hugo Boss dress.

Obviously Beyonce killed it like only she knows how in one of her favourite designers, Givenchy. What elevated this look was that netted veil and dark lip, some may say so what Jennifer Lawrence wore a half veil last year but I say so what this is Queen B we’re talking about. Another one of my favourite looks came from the ever sexy Olivia Munn, she wore a yellow very very very deep-v Diane von Furstenberg dress which admittedly erred on the slutty side but the girly hemline and cute Hollywood curls helped her veer away from that. But I mean when you look as good as she does and is as smart, funny and clever as she is I can only say WOW. Jessica Alba was like a golden goddess on the Met Gala red carpet also wearing Diane von Furstenberg. I am in absolute awe of her make up though, that bronzed smokey eye is literally the perfect look ever. FLAWLESS.

Of course I can’t go onto the best of the rest without including Lupita Nyong’o. Her stylist, and Prada for that matter, did not get the dress code memo because she turned up in a 20s style flapper dress complete with jewels, feathers, a headpiece and brown slip dress. Of course she secured herself some column inches from this get up but I think I’ve come to the conclusion that in the search of something epic to follow up the Oscars Prada gown they’ve gone way off book and came up with this. But guess what, Lupita is fashion’s dahling at the moment and she can more than get away with this by sweeping it under the rug and adding it to her very very small pile of mishits.

Now someone who just added to her big massive long list of mishits and mishaps was Katie Holmes, and that hot yellow mess she called a Marchesa gown. When will she ever learn?!

Red carpet: MTV Movie Awards 2014

There were only three words on everyone’s lips after the MTV Movie Awards last night and that was ZAC EFRON SHIRTLESS.

Behold the beauty:

Where was I?

The red carpet fashion proved somewhat of a mixed bag as always when it comes to cast members of MTV shows mingling amongst film stars. I also only recognised about 30% of the people walking the red carpet so I’ll stick to who I know..

Shailene Woodley has been a regular feature on best dressed lists recently after her promo tour for new movie Divergent. Her style is known to be very laid back and verging on the lazy (i.e bare feet, no make up), but she’s been knocking it out of the park and this latest Balmain look is no exception. For some this olive leather look may be a bit like marmite but I love the tough girl edge via the belted skirt and gladiator type sandals and that little flash of skin via that knot feature.

I normally discount Rita Ora whenever she appears on a red carpet because I just cannot get on board with her style. But this black satin very deep cleavage dress by Barbara Casasola, those blonde tumbling waves and that not-going-anywhere red lip all works perfectly. Well done Rita, and I salute you for ripping off Zac Efron’s shirt.

Of course Jessica Alba does sexy and cute like only she can. Her Piece d’Anarchive crop top is super simple and very easy to replicate on the high street along with her full ball skirt by one of her favourite brnad Kenzo. The mix of citrus and white is so effective with a little touch of monochrome via her shoes, Jessica is working every spring trend to perfection.

Chrissy Teigen has been an awards carpet regular this year, being the perfect plus one to her musician hubby John Legend. She either goes full on glamazon sexy or super cute and girly, the latter is what she chose to channel at the MTV Movie Awards in her Ulyana Sergeenko Couture bird print dress. I’m glad that we’ve seen quite a lot of Ulyana’s collection because I basically loved it and love Chrissy in this in spite of the boring shoes.

Another Ulyana Sergeenko Couture creation, this time modelled by Rihanna. Some said on my Twitter feed that it looked like she was ready for bed, and Rihanna is known for doing the whole lingerie look to the extreme but what I love about this particular boudoir-inspired look was her toned down styling. The wavy hair pinned loosely back with face-framing tendrils, the stunning bronze make up and the matching nude shoes just totally worked. Someone else, say Rita Ora for example, wouldn’t been able to resist adding that red lip and making it trashy but Rihanna works it like only she can, this is one of my favourite looks from her in a long time.

Another major departure from her usual style on the red carpet was Nicki Minaj. I couldn’t believe how amazing she looked with her natural hair colour minus all the bells and whistles she normally sports. Wearing a figure-hugging black Alexander McQueen gown what made it stand out was her McQueen jewellery, are arm bangles going to make a comeback?

I’ve missed Lupita Nyong’o from the red carpet. She made a bold appearance in a multicoloured Chanel dress at the MTV Movie Awards. I think I only half love it because of the high neck but I think Lupita can pull off anything and those sky blue Casadei Blade pumps are to die for.

I adore Leslie Mann’s flirty polka dot Juan Carlos Obando dress. It’s great for this type of event and pairing orange shoes with black is something I absolutely must try this summer!

Red carpet: Awards season kick-off

It’s the very start of the awards season, possibly my favourite time of the year. Before The Golden Globes on Sunday I thought I’d do a quick red carpet round up of some of the looks we’ve seen at the events leading up to kick off.

There was the Palm Springs Film Festival Awards Gala at the beginning of the week where we saw the lovely Sandra Bullock in a vibrant pink and orange Alex Perry dress. We’ve seen her in quite a few colourful looks throughout her promo tour for Gravity and other appearances, so I hope she doesn’t fall back to black any time soon! The absolutely amazing Lupita Nyong’o, receiving a lot of praise for her role in the hotly-tipped for picture of the year 12 Years A Slave. The newcomer has had a fabulous red carpet run towards the end of 2013 and will no doubt continue to do so, I can’t wait for what’s to come, she wore a beautiful Elie Saab dress to the event. And Naomie Harris, another actress who had a perfect promo tour for Mandela: Walk to Freedom, appeared on the red carpet in one of my favourite designers Naeem Khan.

Next up was the New York Critics’ Circle Film Awards, some may sit on the fence with Cate Blanchett but she has such a unique sense of style that whenever she comes to a major red carpet she is going to bring you everything. I really like this Antonio Berardi dress she wore, it’s something only a select few people could pull off and she does it with aplomb. Deserved mention goes to Melonie Diaz who is doing the awards circuit alongside her Fruitvale co-star Michael B. Jordan, she wore another one of my favourite designers – Cushnie et Ochs. They have this amazing talent to create the perfect cut-outs and sleek lines, I adore this ‘negative strap’ dress on Melonie sexy but not trashy like Malin Akerman’s attempt to wear the designer duo.

Then we had the People’s Choice Awards mid-week with a few celebs turning up to collect their awards, from Sandra Bullock in another colourful creation by Peter Pilotto to Jessica Alba in a sexy white Jason Wu frock. My two favourites from the event were as always whenever she is on the red carpet, Nina Dobrev in a bejewelled Jenny Packham bodycon midi and Anna Faris in a stunning Naeem Khan two piece suit.

Blake Lively is the new face of L’Oreal and apparently doesn’t go to the gym

I love Blake Lively, don’t get me wrong, she has an amazing style (stylist or not as she claims), luscious locks, long legs, and is the new face of L’Oreal.

But why is she one of those celebrities that insists they eat what they want and don’t have a trainer or go to the gym?! Surely that infuriates the sanest of us out there.

Cue the eyerolls when in a recent interview with Vogue Paris, the actress, model and “celebrity homemaker” (whatever the hell that is) replied when asked if she followed a special diet:

“No! I’m lucky to have an active lifestyle. I don’t need to have a (trainer) or pay attention to what I eat. I can’t start my day without a cup of hot milk chocolate or finish without crunching a few dark chocolate squares. It’s good for my morale.”

Oh Blake you make us lesser women who have to resist the chocolate/sweets/cakes temptation on a daily basis so that we don’t pile on those pesky pounds feel so inferior. I wouldn’t mind if you admitted you worked out, not that old Gwyneth-adage of looking after yourself and simply having an “active lifestyle” to credit your beautiful figure. Grrrr.

On top of the lucky can-eat-chocolate-daily-and-don’t-put-on-weight-gene Blake Lively has just been announced as the new face of L’Oreal Paris. She is now allowed to utter those immortal words that we have all practised in our bedroom mirrors at some point in our lives.

At the announcement held in Paris last week, Blake, who is already the face of Gucci Premiere fragrance, said of the new partnership: “I’m thrilled and honoured to join the incredible women who represent L’Oréal Paris. I grew up with the inspiration of their message, ‘We’re worth it’; what an important value to instil in women.”

I was pretty surprised when she was announced as a L’Oreal Paris girl amongst the likes of Cheryl Cole, Eva Longoria, Gwen Stefani, Freida Pinto and others, as she hasn’t got any new projects up-and-coming. Can being the wife of Ryan Reynolds really hold that much clout or is it just the perennial popularity of Blake Lively: The Brand.

It may have something to do with the news that Blake will be launching a lifestyle brand, like the aforementioned Gwyneth, in the near future. She told Vogue UK in September:

“It’s something that will be launching in a few months and that I’m really, really thrilled about. The main element of it is that it’s about storytelling and it’s about living a very one-of-a-kind, curated life, and how to achieve that. There’s nothing like it out there – it’s without a genre.”

Gwyneth has Goop and Jessica Alba has her Honest Company, Blake’s lifestyle company could appeal to the even younger generation of homemakers out there, and well if she can tell us a way of being able to eat chocolate on a daily basis whilst still looking like she does I’m in.

Top Knots

According to Glamour Top Knots are the “DO of the season” (see how they did that, on their dos and don’ts page yeah).

Of course I can’t do this because I have recently short hair, how could I ever manage to scrape it all into a top knot.

Well I’ll have you know I had a brainwave, extensions! I had hair extensions a while ago and I kept them so I could still put them in every no and again, how much fun to be able to  change my hair with a few extra pieces!

I tried it and you know what I champion the top knot, like Glamour says it’s “easy and glam” and boy are they right. When I went out on Wednesday night I didn’t want to get to dressed up and I really couldn’t be bothered to straighten my hair in the heat so voila a fast and simple style that adds a few extra inches in height.

But you have to make sure that the bun is sat right on top of your head otherwise it will look like a “ballerina bun” and then there’s the other problem of a top knot or high ponytail being associated with the term ‘chav’. Eeek, but if you style it right then there’s no chance of that occurring unless someone doesn’t ‘get’ the trend.

I particularly like Gemma Arterton’s version of a top knot, which she sported for the Clash of the Titans film premiere, and it perfectly shows off her angel wing tattoo.
