Blushing brides: Kim Kardashian vs Poppy Delevingne

The only wedding I’ve written about on The Importance of Being Oreo was the royal wedding and that most beautiful Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton wedding dress.

But I can’t pass the opportunity to speak about the wedding of the year and that bespoke Givency wedding dress.

That’s right, the Kimye wedding. I’m only slightly ashamed to admit I watch The Kardashians, who gives a toss, it’s insane, crazy, mental, and a funny insight into the world’s vainest family. What’s not to love?!

There’d been mounting speculation on the designer Kim Kardashian would pick to make her fifth wedding gown, that privilege was awarded to fashion BFF Ricardo Tisci. The Givenchy designer made up for his Met Gala floral catastrophe with an undeniably exquisite lace confection complete with a cut out back – well it is Kim Kardashian after all…

With all the hoopla over the Kim Kardasian and Kayne West wedding in Florence, another celeb wedding was able to go pretty much under the radar. Although to be fair Poppy Delevingne had already wed her new hubby James Cook in London on May 16th, she had a second wedding in the gorgeous setting of Marrakech with a few of her closest and coolest celeb friends in attendance.

Poppy Delevingne had already stunned in a Chanel creation but managed to go even more hippyish with her second dress by designer and close friend Peter Dundas. The Emilio Pucci creative director fashioned a boho wedding dress for Poppy featuring floral appliques and that seemingly popular tunic style feature which turned into a super huge skirt. The temperatures in Marrakech are currently in their 30s so I’m guessing she had a bit of a sweat on carrying that about!

What I pose to you dear readers. Which dress do you prefer? Kim Kardashian’s Givenchy couture creation, classic with a modern twist? Poppy Delevingne’s first wedding gown, a heavily embellished Chanel dress and her retro side-parted hair or her second boho Pucci dress very much in keeping with the bride’s hippy personality.

Solange may just be the better Knowles sister

You know maybe I’d never say it out loud if you asked me, but yes I think Solange Knowles is the better dressed sister.

*GASP*

Don’t get me wrong I am a huge Beyonce fan. Anybody who knows me can contest to that fact and the seven times I’ve been to see her perform in concert. But she’s only just started to get to grips with her own style and look, and even then she rarely veers away from Topshop coordinates

Solange on the other hand is so unique, original, fresh, bright and colourful. She likes to rock her natural hair which really makes her a good role model for black and mixed race women who may not be so confident about wearing their natural afro curls (i.e Me). And that’s something I’ve always found jarring about Beyonce, that she insists on dying her hair an unnatural blonde. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve longed for blonde white hair when I should have been looking to Solange for my hairspiration.

What I love about Solange is her absolute undying love for colour. Her utmost favourite colour at a guess would be yellow. Which she looks divine in, but most recently she’s taken to another citrus shade – orange.

Her performance at the first weekend of Coachella was mostly talked about because of the surprise (and pretty awesome) appearance of her ridiculously famous sister. But what really caught my eye was that head to toe orange look, which inspired my latest list for Shopcade.

Red carpet: Screen Actors Guild Awards 2014

At the first major awards show last week the Golden Globes had some great gowns on the red carpet, most notably the red haute couture displayed by Emma Watson and Lupita Nyong’o.

We come to the next major red carpet, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which was held in LA last night. Overall I feel like there wasn’t really that wow moment when we saw Lupita’s Ralph Lauren at the Golden Globes, but there was still plenty of beautiful dresses on display.

Watching the live coverage on E! was pretty slow to begin with, seems like the celebs were late to attend the red carpet and there were definitely a lot of looks that were not covered by presenters Guiliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and Ross Matthews. We got most of the major stars, speaking with the presenters including of course Jennifer Lawrence and her “armpit vaginas”.

As well as the LOLs from Jennifer Lawrence, I was absolutely thrilled to see her in the Christian Dior Couture Fall 2013 look that I picked as my number one choice for her to wear during awards season. I was so glad for this sparkly column dress after Jennifer’s disastrous look from the same couture collection last week. It was still a simple look, and she had toned down the make up to make the dress be the focal point. A comment was made to Guiliana in reference to how tight her dress was and how she was worried her arm skin looked like a vagina!

Lupita Nyong’o looked stunning in a custom turquoise Gucci gown with a slight train. The contrast of the colour against her skin just made her look even more flawless, and the floral and gold detail was exquisite. I did really love this gown but if I had to choose between say her last three looks, from the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice and the SAG Awards I  would pick the red Ralph Lauren. But I am still excited to see what she picks for the Oscars because surely by now designers are clamouring to dress her for the biggest red carpet of them all.

After her Valentino look at the Golden Globes, Amy Adams chose to cover up a little bit more skin with her royal blue Antonio Berardi dress. I love this colour on her, she knows blue works well against her hair colour and the structured  bust and shoulder cutout make this fitted gown stand out that bit more. If I had to say anything it would be the crystal embellished belt, I think it’s my own personal opinion but I don’t like the crystals and would have preferred a gold metal belt instead, or maybe it serves in place of a necklace.

Amy Adams Antonio Berardi SAG

I didn’t see Isla Fisher on E! but looking over all of the coverage today I noticed how beautiful she looked. Her Oscar de la Renta silver satin dress evokes the feel of old Hollywood glamour but in a modern way, with the dark berry lip, green jewels and voluminous hair. I can’t decide how I feel about Emilia Clarke’s custom Calvin Klein, it just seems like she’s blending rather than standing out. I felt the coppery sequin one shoulder dress washed her out but she got to flirt with Jared Leto so I think she felt like a million dollars either way. I’m always going to like a dress that is a great colour, so Sandra Bullock’s jewel green Lanvin dress was a good look for her. Some people on Twitter felt it was too “bridesmaid” but the thigh split, pulled back hair and shorter length certainly worked for me.

sag awards firstI’ve included Cate Blanchett below in the best of the rest on the red carpet, I really disliked her pink Givenchy gown but it seems that everyone else loved it. They are lying when they say she was the best dressed at the SAG Awards, that is a pregnancy gown if I ever did see one and she’s not even pregnant! Someone who is actually pregnant gets a pass for her Prada ensemble, I mean Kerry Washington wearing a crop top is so brave that I don’t care – I’m a gladiator through and through. Other worthy mentions include Jane Krakowski’s green Roland Mouret, Claire Danes in Vionnet, and Jennifer Garner in Max Mara.

Golden Globes 2014: After-parties

This year there was so many dresses on the main red carpet there wasn’t room for the after-party looks. So I’ve gathered the best looks from the celebs that attended the InStyle and Warner Bros., HBO, and NBC/Universal, Weinstein/Netflix Golden Globes Awards Parties.

Stand outs for me were of course Nina Dobrev in an embellished Emilio Pucci dress, Nikki Reed in a turquoise Monique Lhuillier, and Jamie King in Prabal Gurung which proved to translate much better on the red carpet than Zoe Saldana’s messy look.

Being Oreo @ Vogue Fashion’s Night Out Manchester

vogue fno mapVogue Fashion’s Night Out came to Manchester for the first time and I think they made a great choice of location. Well of course I would say that I just recently moved to the city and was as excited as every other fashion blogger that they were forgoing the exclusive London location to the more accessible, friendly and very northern Manchester.

I didn’t think the t-shirt was up to scratch this year so decided not to spend the £18 on the GAP designed version. There was plenty on offer for FNO and it was difficult to work out where to start, but starting at the H&M on Market Street was a great option as I met the lovely Pixie Geldof who was DJ’ing for the clothing brand, she was more than happy to pose for pictures with shoppers!

Pixie Geldof djing

me and pixieOf course the best part about wandering the shops, was the free champagne/wine/cocktails which would put a smile on anyone’s face. It’s the best way to attract shoppers because everyone loves a freebie, even interestingly flavoured mac and cheese the UGG store were handing out. Or the ridiculously strong whisky flavoured ice cream at Hugo Boss which you could have easily got drunk from!

boohoobus

edith make upA stop off at the Boohoo bus showcasing the Manchester-based brand’s next collection available to order on the night with free delivery and the chance of being the first to get your hands on the clothes before they were online. On the top deck was a beauty, hair and nail bar offering three different hair styles, beauty looks and a nail manicure. My friend Edith chose a smoky eye, a really flattering look because the make up artist chose a more natural shade than the standard black make up.

Marks & Spencer were on hand with Prosecco and a style talk, going through the latest limited edition collection with some very covetable pieces including an orange coat with a leopard print collar (right below), and the perfect black tailored trousers all with a 10% off for the night!

marksandspencerHeading to Selfridges was next on the agenda, the store smelt gorgeous with popcorn and crepe stands along with drinks and cute miniature bottles of Diet Coke designed by Marc Jacobs all served by deliciously handsome male models wearing dungarees. I’m not going to lie and say we didn’t wander around a little longer just to gawp.

popcorn

Unfortunately I found out way too late that the talented Sophy Robson was going to be doing nail appointments at a pop up Chanel bar. Definitely a bit gutted, so a picture of my nail idol had to do instead ha! As well as spotting Henry Holland in the Erdem section, on the top floor was the delightfully eclectic Jameela Jamil, also spinning the decks for the store. How awesome would a night out with all these guys be?!

sophy robson

jameela jamilAfter popping into Hugo Boss and UGG on the way back we headed towards my absolute must attend destination: Emporio Armani. Nothing to do with the clothes I might add, but my favourite band The Maccabees were doing a DJ set there and I needed to see them. At The Avenue in Spinningfields this was definitely one of the more luxury venues of the night and right next to the cool entrance to Australasia. The Armani store was serving very strong vodka and Prosecco cocktails and Australasia sushi with chopsticks, which I must say was pretty difficult to manage but very tasty.

the avenue

the maccabeesObviously you need to have a schedule planned for the night to get the best out of what Vogue were offering, especially as we missed creative director Kate Phelan at Topshop and by the time we reached the Arndale Centre later on in the evening the only thing left to do was leave our lipstick kisses on the wall and enter the #puckerup competition.

topshop

You couldn’t fault an evening of free fashion fun and celebrity spotting, and even if you didn’t go with the intention of actually shopping all the beauty and hair bars dotted around gave you the chance to try something new and feel special all at the same time. I hope FNO comes back to Manchester next year!

Red Carpet: Emmys 2013

First time watching E! Live from the Red Carpet for the Emmys, after so many years of missing out not having Sky now I do and boy I thought I was in for a treat.

Only I wasn’t. Good god from the ‘glamazoom cam’ to the ‘mani cam’ to the ‘mani gram’ it sounded like I was in a hospital waiting room not watching E!’s red carpet coverage. It’s so ludicrously stupid watching walking skeleton Guiliana Rancic force celebrities to parade their hands in a miniature version of the red carpet to show of their manicures and then show off their shoes in the ‘stiletto cam’. Honestly.

Then the other half was Ryan Seacrest, who literally looked like he couldn’t give two shits about being there and didn’t have a clue about any of the celebrities he was interviewing apart from all the Modern Family cast that turned up as the Fug Girls said it was like a “sausage fest” apart from the funny moment Claire Danes booted Seacrest out of the way to fawn over her good friend Lena Dunham or the other moment Amy Poehler hijacked his Carrie Underwood interview and made it so much better.

Seacrest infuriated me even more when interviewing Bryan Cranston there in support of his amazingly popular show Breaking Bad and basically said he didn’t watch it, which fair enough not everyone does no beef, but then for Christina Hendricks to follow and they pass each other on the stairs and Seacrest says oh have you guys met this is Bryan. Seriously as a showbiz host surely this guy should know they starred together in Drive?!!!

Anyway the main thing that we didn’t get to see enough of in this two hour red carpet snorefest was the only reason I watched – THE DRESSES.

Initially my gut went towards Rose Byrne as my best dressed of the night, I love that she managed to make a bare midriff look sexy and classy at the same time in her on trend blush pink Calvin Klein dress. But then I remembered the first massive wow of the Emmys red carpet when Linda Cardellini stepped out wearing a beautifully structured grape coloured Donna Karan Atelier gown. It’s a draw between these two from sleek and simple versus structured and intricate.

Rose and Linda

Second on the list is Emilia Clarke’s Donna Karan Atelier gown, one that I was anticipating a lot as she’s always a stand out on the red carpet. I loved her white leaf detailed dress paired with a silver metal belt which I think made the look. Some people on Twitter likened her dress to shredded tissue, I think that’s a bit extreme! What I thought was interesting and what I didn’t spot at first is that her gown isn’t actually strapless but an illusion one-shoulder, it’s about time someone demonstrated how to match skin tone to the illusion panelling!

Emilia Clarke close far

Emilia Clarke in Donna Karan Atelier

Next up, Tina Fey looking just hot in one of my favourite colours. Her Narciso Rodriguez dress is basically very similar to what Sofia Vergara always wears but we don’t usually expect something like this from Tina Fey who tends to favour darker colours. Keeping things simple in the hair and beauty department and adding some nice bling I definitely think she was a stand out of the night.

The colour is probably why I like Alison Williams dress, but the reason she picked this plain and somewhat boring Ralph Lauren gown was because she “felt comfortable”. Isn’t fashion about taking a risk, and making those memorable lists? She’s just floating in the middle and the only reason her look is elevated is because she has stupidly uh-mazing hair.

Another floater is Kerry Washington. I really wanted her to be on the top, every dress she wears I compare to that stunning Giles gown she wore to the London premiere of Django Unchained, and this princess frothy frou-frou floral embellished chiffon right-off-the-runway Marchesa is so beneath that. There’s some rumours of an early pregnancy due to the slight empire line but I just think this is nice but I want more. She can give me more!

thirds emmys

At first I really liked Claire Danes’ Armani Prive but that was because I was swept up in faux-bob-gate to notice her weird boobs, still the detail is beautiful. I don’t really know Julia Louis-Dreyfus that well so I kind of overlooked her, but her Monique Lhuillier is a little bit epic. I wish someone with bigger star power (in my eyes at least) had worn it. Anna Gunn, who is looking frighteningly skinny, did look great in her Romona Kevesa monochrome look which was definitely a winner’s dress as she picked up the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Breaking Bad.

And then there was Lena Dunham who I always expect to be on my worst dressed list because she refuses to choose anything that flatters her shape. Anyone else noticed that Prada just doesn’t do a good red carpet gown? Well Lena and Michelle Dockery both wore Prada and both dresses were hideous. Then there was Zosia Marmet who makes my list just for not knowing the difference between a custom gown and a gown that has already been shown in the Honor resort collection that is exactly the same as your dress (guuurrrl). And then January Ice Queen Jones who was boring and unfunny whilst being interviewed by Seacrest and wore a really dull Givenchy custom creation, her hair was nice though.

Oh I nearly forgot – the jaw droppingly handsome Kit Harington was there. Yum.

Promo Tour: Lily Collins for Mortal Instruments

Lily Collins may have just executed the best promo tour ever in the history of promo tours.

She has spent the past few months promoting The Mortal Instruments and every single look has been pretty spectacular. From casual day time talk show looks, to photo calls, premieres and magazine parties, Lily Collins and those amazing eyebrows have been everywhere.

Here are some (all) of my favourite looks that Lily has worn to promote her new movie, alongside her ex-boyfriend Jamie Campbell Bower and Kevin Zegers.

Casual

I say these are casual looks mainly because they are during the day time. But Lily knows how to still work that girly/sexy vibe depending on her make up and hair.

The first outfit is Stella McCartney, she has this amazing sixties vibe going on here with a slightly teased beehive and cute natural make up. This could be a difficult look to pull off with that extra layer but the show of legs makes it work.

The Paper London shorts and crop combo at Comic Con is just one of many crop tops Lily Collins has been sporting during this promo tour. Perfect for the event keeping that relaxed look with messy beachy waves, a slick of pink lipstick and a flash of abs.

I adore the Bec & Bridge look Lily wore for a meet and greet. So fresh and girly, the soft waves in her hair keep it sweet as does the hint of pink lipstick. Love the chunky necklace which sets everything off nicely.

Lace – sexy and angelic

Here Lily is wearing two very different looks by Houghton. The custom made red design she wore to the Madrid premiere is stunning, the retro waves and amazing red lipstick complements the dress perfectly. The white backless Houghton dress she wore to the Toronto premiere is very angelic and the make up and hair is in keeping with the whole theme – two very different looks, both amazing.

Vampy

I wondered how dark Lily Collins’ eyebrows can go. Well here in the Maxime Simeons look – very dark. This is one of my favourite looks of the whole tour, it’s so easy to pick a pretty dress so I love how she has kept things fresh and gone over to the dark side. It’s so hard to pull off dark lipstick, dark brows, thigh high boots and a red sheer shirt without looking like a hooker. Well done Lily.

This tuxedo dress is fast becoming one of my favourite new styles this season. This Alexander McQueen version isn’t as fitted as the Dior version so I like how Lily has kept things to a bare minimum not overloading with jewels and wearing smoky make up with curly hair.

Lily Collins chose Rouland Mouret for the Flaunt magazine cover party. Another crop trop, but if you have abs like that I’d wear them all the time too. The top is a deconstructed shirt with a collar and buttons and pleated bust, the black skirt completes the very popular monochrome trend, and to top it off a bright red lip and a tousled up do.

Lily Collins vampy Promo Tour

Maxime Simeons // Alexander McQueen // Rouland Mouret

White/Black

Lily definitely has a fondness for monochrome during this promo tour, either wearing black and white, all black or all white. I can’t get enough of Cushnie et Ochs at the moment, their cutouts are to die for and if I could get my hands on one of their uber sexy designs I would wear it until it fell apart! Lily’s vampy make up works so well against the stark white of this cutout dress that she wore to the LA premiere of Mortal Instruments, it would be so easy to just pick a pink or red lip but this dark red colour and slicked back hair is something I wish I could pull off.

Then you have a complete 180° for the Teen Choice Awards where Lily chose a gorgeous nude make up palette to wear with her Fausto Puglisi gown. I love the palm tree print paired with a black tee, I think it would have been overwhelming for her to wear the print head to toe so this high-low skirt works well.

Then we are back to Lily’s sexy best. Smoky eye make up, chunky jewels all against an all black look. Another up do this time with more of a quiff than the beehive but I like that she kept it tied up to show off that necklace. I think the crop top trend is here to stick around for a little while longer if Lily Collins’ wardrobe is anything to go by!
