Red carpet: Critics’ Choice Awards 2014

The stars were back out on the red carpet for the Critics’ Choice Awards held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, hence the appearance of Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep in sunglasses – it must have been sunny.

The newly crowned queen of the red carpet Lupita Nyong’o once again proved her worth in a custom Calvin Klein cut out dress, in white, looking uh-may-zing. Seriously that woman. I literally cannot wait to see what she wears for The Oscars. Juliette Lewis looked beautiful in a red super sleek Zac Posen gown, and Amy Adams’ bright pop of hot pink  Roland Mouret dress against her hair and skin tone was drop-dead gorgeous. As always I love a good jumpsuit on the red carpet, anybody that dares to rock trousers in a sea of gowns wins for me and Margot Robbie looked sensational in a black lace Elie Saab look.

Other worthy mentions include Jessica Chastain’s green Nina Ricci gown, Leslie Bibb’s interesting House of Roland look, Kristen Bell in a dramatic Pamella Roland black gown, Sandra Bullock in a romantic ruffled Lanvin column dress, Christina Applegate in a red lace Marchesa with a poor choice of shoes, Adele Exarchopoulos in a questionable pair of cycling shorts underneath a feathered Louis Vuitton, and Cate Blanchett in a very casual Lanvin t-shirt dress.

Golden Globes 2014: Red haute couture

I settled myself into watch the Golden Globes red carpet live on E! last night, when I watched the channel the last time for the EMMYs Ryan Seacrest and Guiliana Rancic drove me insane and they were on top form again (plus the helium inflated Ross Matthews), but there I was plus my laptop and as many other Apple products I could use all at once.

Unlike last year when the red carpet was bare on colour, the 2014 Golden Globes red carpet was awash with rainbow hues and a little sewage.

I’ve decided that it’s a tie this year for best dressed, a tie in the colour red and in individuality. Over the past few months newcomer Lupita Nyong’o has stormed the red carpet with not one mishap, designers are clamouring to dress her, she’s building up a portfolio of magazine covers (I bet it won’t be long before Vogue comes a calling) and she’s appeared in her first fashion campaign for Miu Miu. She literally had my jaw drop on the floor when I saw this striking red Ralph Lauren dress, I’m a sucker for a cape and it didn’t go unnoticed that this was very reminiscent of Gwyneth Paltrow’s white Tom Ford 2012 Oscars dress. An easy win with 9/10.

Then we have Emma Watson. From the front you could even go so far as to say this Dior Haute Couture is a pretty ‘meh’ dress, a bare amount of jewels and a very simple updo, but then it’s all party in the back as she takes a big fashion risk with a completely open back over black slim fit trousers. I just love it, I’m glad she was daring enough to wear trousers too and I hope this is a turning point for Emma, she just needs a little bit of scandal to shed her Hermoine image. A deserving 9/10.

best dresses golden globesI was pretty surprised by (the newly engaged) Emma Roberts’ black Lanvin look, it was a really gorgeous old Hollywood moment topped off with a pop of colour via those stunning turquoise drop earrings. I realised I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was bothering me about Cate Blanchett’s Armani look, and I realised after it appearing next to Emma’s black gown that the nude lining makes it appear slightly brown. Maybe it’s the lighting because the detail on the back of her gown was really intricate. Adele Exarchopoulos is a baby at 20 and was only 19 during filming of the much applauded Blue is the Warmest Colour, she stuck to black too in a Miu Miu gown adorned with crystals at the hem and those infamous (Miuccia Prada) dress darts.

best dressed golden globes secondI missed Julianna Margulies at first but then found that I really liked her Andrew Gn gown, the gold details, simple fitted bust and voluminous skirt keep her look classic topped off with a chic updo. Fairly unknown unless you’ve seen Caitlin Gardener in Masters of Sex on Channel 4, but she stood out on the red carpet in this 50s style sky blue Emilia Wickstead dress and coral accessories. I’ve missed Leslie Mann on the red carpet she always looks great, and even though this is another black lacy gown the peplum and curved bust add a cool twist to the Dolce & Gabbana look.

best dressed golden globes threeI think Lizzy Caplan was another television star that stood out, her Emilio Pucci dress had contrasting silver sleeves that definitely gives her an edge over the sea of pretty gowns and dresses. Margot Robbie just oozed sex appeal in her Gucci gown, thigh split and a deep cleavage, but erring on the right side of slutty – as Guiliana Rancic said “How are you single”… There was a fair few Tom Ford looks on the red carpet for the Golden Globes, Hayden Paniettiere’s was not amongst my favourites but Naomi Watts pulled off her dress with understated glamour. Naomi does tend to favour metallic for the major red carpets, who can forget her Armani Prive from the Oscars last year?!

best dressed golden globes fourHere’s the best of the rest – Amy Adams’ two-tone Valentino gown was very daring and most likened it to her character from American Hustle… Kate Beckinsale worked a metallic mermaid Zuhair Murad stunner we’ve seen her in looks like this before but I never get fatigued by her unlike Sofia Vergara… Kate Mara’s new blonde ‘do took nothing away from her J.Mendel dress, great ruche detail and colour… Sandra Bullock’s Prabal Gurung has received a lot of flack and despite someone likening it to Liquorice Allsorts I still ship it… And to Taylor Swift who despite displaying no sparkle whatsoever in her Carolina Herrera colour block gown she still looked lovely (that’s all the niceness I can manage because it’s not a bad dress but I just can’t stand the girl).

best dressed golden globes fiveAnd special mention goes to the hot mess on the red carpet in the form of Paula Patton and her ridiculous Stephane Rolland gown. I couldn’t go without mentioning Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior sleeping bag, it’s such a shame I was so looking forward to her red carpet appearance this is what happens when she’s had a good run she always balances it out with a bad look that manages to spurn a meme. And the one look I’m on the fence with is Zoe Saldana’s Prabal Gurung, I feel there’s way too much going on maybe if the straps on the sleeve would disappear I could handle it.

Red carpet: Awards season kick-off

It’s the very start of the awards season, possibly my favourite time of the year. Before The Golden Globes on Sunday I thought I’d do a quick red carpet round up of some of the looks we’ve seen at the events leading up to kick off.

There was the Palm Springs Film Festival Awards Gala at the beginning of the week where we saw the lovely Sandra Bullock in a vibrant pink and orange Alex Perry dress. We’ve seen her in quite a few colourful looks throughout her promo tour for Gravity and other appearances, so I hope she doesn’t fall back to black any time soon! The absolutely amazing Lupita Nyong’o, receiving a lot of praise for her role in the hotly-tipped for picture of the year 12 Years A Slave. The newcomer has had a fabulous red carpet run towards the end of 2013 and will no doubt continue to do so, I can’t wait for what’s to come, she wore a beautiful Elie Saab dress to the event. And Naomie Harris, another actress who had a perfect promo tour for Mandela: Walk to Freedom, appeared on the red carpet in one of my favourite designers Naeem Khan.

Next up was the New York Critics’ Circle Film Awards, some may sit on the fence with Cate Blanchett but she has such a unique sense of style that whenever she comes to a major red carpet she is going to bring you everything. I really like this Antonio Berardi dress she wore, it’s something only a select few people could pull off and she does it with aplomb. Deserved mention goes to Melonie Diaz who is doing the awards circuit alongside her Fruitvale co-star Michael B. Jordan, she wore another one of my favourite designers – Cushnie et Ochs. They have this amazing talent to create the perfect cut-outs and sleek lines, I adore this ‘negative strap’ dress on Melonie sexy but not trashy like Malin Akerman’s attempt to wear the designer duo.

Then we had the People’s Choice Awards mid-week with a few celebs turning up to collect their awards, from Sandra Bullock in another colourful creation by Peter Pilotto to Jessica Alba in a sexy white Jason Wu frock. My two favourites from the event were as always whenever she is on the red carpet, Nina Dobrev in a bejewelled Jenny Packham bodycon midi and Anna Faris in a stunning Naeem Khan two piece suit.

The Oscars 2011: The dresses

Michelle Williams in Chanel Haute Couture, doing what she does best simple and understated.

Absolute shining example of how to wear Givenchy Couture, Cate Blanchett is my best dressed of the night without a doubt.

Wearing custom-made Marc Bouwer, winner of Best Supporting Actress Melissa Leo looked charmingly beautiful.

Amy Adams wore a sapphire blue embellished L’Wren Scott dress, and Cartier jewels worth $1.35m!

Former Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock in a perfect red Vera Wang fishtail gown.

I do love this dress, Calvin Klein’s collection has proved to be very popular amongst a few actresses on the red carpet… NB In retrospect every time I have seen Jennifer in a red dress nothing seems to beat this hot look.

These are the dresses that stood out, as they were all intricately detailed or with bright pops of colour in a verrrrry nude sea of dresses. Not one of the better awards shows I’ve seen, but then again it’s the Oscars and they’re all about conservative, I don’t see why the attendees have to bore me though. I was hoping the exclusive Vanity Fair party would bring back some excitement, but so far I’ve seen Emma Stone with really bad hair and wearing an odd Chanel Houte Couture dress, Madonna in a leotard with some sheer bits to make her daughter less embarrassed, Cameron Diaz in an ultra-mini dress by Carolina Herrera, and Gwyneth Paltrow channeling Strictly Come Dancing with a crystal-adorned nude dress.

Out of the arrivals Selena Gomez wowed me the most, obviously her Dolce & Gabbana dress was chosen for her, but her Justin Bieber shaped arm candy easily rose plenty of eyebrows. Poor tweens, he’s taken now.

Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Oscar Viewing party is also another big hitter for celebs, Nicole Richie was stunning in a white hot Halston dress with her husband Joel Madden, Odette Yustman was another celeb in red wearing Monique Lhuillier, and Chace Crawford and Ryan Kwanten looking too fit for words in tuxedos.
