Met Gala 2014 ‘Charles James: White Tie and Decorations’

This year’s Met Gala theme was in honour of Charles James, a British-born fashion designer known as ‘America’s First Couturier’. So you’d think that the dress code of ‘white tie and decorations’ would be pretty straightforward to follow.

I mean I was expecting so many big puffy ballgowns long sleeve gloves and jewels dripping everywhere. It’s just a shame that so many celebrities flouted the dress code and just treated it like any old red carpet event, I mean I guess I go on about the theme every year, but why is it so seemingly difficult to stick to a simple rule?

There was such a mish-mash of looks for the Met Gala 2014 that I’m not sure where to begin. For some attendees they went all out and worked a ballgown to the max. Sarah Jessica Parker, Arizona Muse and Karolina Kurkova were stand outs for me. From SJP’s over the top hair do, the extravagant graphic print train adorned with Oscar de la Renta’s signature in red and those white gloves; Karolina Kurkova wore the best Marchesa of the night (Katie Holmes looked a hot mess in her yellow confection) of course this gown was made for an event like this, could you imagine it on any other red carpet without people claiming she was being OTT… And Arizona Muse looked beyond perfection in a gorgeous red Ralph & Russo creation from their debut couture collection which I simply adored.

At first I was very much on the fence with Emmy Rossum’s Carolina Herrera gown, it reminded me a lot of Lucy Liu’s Golden Globes 2013 dress which I fell in love with at first sight. This yellow floral design was very much in keeping with the theme and it was very spring-like, so well done Emmy because technically you ticked all the boxes. I really liked Hailee Steinfeld’s Prabal Gurung monochrome dress, but again it struck similarities in shape with Sandra Bullock’s Golden Globes dress from this year, maybe tried and tested works for this designer now but I miss the drama of his RTW collections. Another designer that absolutely sticks to a tried and tested formula is Zac Posen, his signature red carpet gowns are unmistakable, however his teal creation that Liu Wen wore was stunning.

Emmy Rossum // Hailee Steinfeld // Liu Wen - Being Oreo

Honourable mention must go to Greta Gerwig who could have easily been missed had it not been for her modern take on couture in her Theory by Olivier Theyskens’ one shoulder monochrome gown. Also to the Topshop girls who worked the theme to a T, with Kendall Jenner, Toni Garn, Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman all looking like sheer perfection in their respective looks. Ever since Topshop created that first stand out Met Gala look for Ginnifer Goodwin in 2011 they’ve just gotten better and better at this event.

Greta Gerwig // Topshop girls - Being Oreo

Now for those with the best plus ones. The ever flawless and with hands down the best accessory ever (her hubby), Blake Lively. It’s so nice to see her back to her best and also with Ryan Reynolds who so often eschews these types of events. Another couple who worked the magic of the Met Gala red carpet was David and Victoria Beckham in her own custom design. I liked their return to that matchy matchy best because it proves how far they’ve come that they can still rock it without the horrors of the past rearing it’s ugly head. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield also looked adorable on the red carpet together, with Emma in a cute two-piece pink Thakoon look and let’s not forget my absolute faves Josh Jackson and Diane Kruger in a very pretty Hugo Boss dress.

Obviously Beyonce killed it like only she knows how in one of her favourite designers, Givenchy. What elevated this look was that netted veil and dark lip, some may say so what Jennifer Lawrence wore a half veil last year but I say so what this is Queen B we’re talking about. Another one of my favourite looks came from the ever sexy Olivia Munn, she wore a yellow very very very deep-v Diane von Furstenberg dress which admittedly erred on the slutty side but the girly hemline and cute Hollywood curls helped her veer away from that. But I mean when you look as good as she does and is as smart, funny and clever as she is I can only say WOW. Jessica Alba was like a golden goddess on the Met Gala red carpet also wearing Diane von Furstenberg. I am in absolute awe of her make up though, that bronzed smokey eye is literally the perfect look ever. FLAWLESS.

Of course I can’t go onto the best of the rest without including Lupita Nyong’o. Her stylist, and Prada for that matter, did not get the dress code memo because she turned up in a 20s style flapper dress complete with jewels, feathers, a headpiece and brown slip dress. Of course she secured herself some column inches from this get up but I think I’ve come to the conclusion that in the search of something epic to follow up the Oscars Prada gown they’ve gone way off book and came up with this. But guess what, Lupita is fashion’s dahling at the moment and she can more than get away with this by sweeping it under the rug and adding it to her very very small pile of mishits.

Now someone who just added to her big massive long list of mishits and mishaps was Katie Holmes, and that hot yellow mess she called a Marchesa gown. When will she ever learn?!

Solange may just be the better Knowles sister

You know maybe I’d never say it out loud if you asked me, but yes I think Solange Knowles is the better dressed sister.

*GASP*

Don’t get me wrong I am a huge Beyonce fan. Anybody who knows me can contest to that fact and the seven times I’ve been to see her perform in concert. But she’s only just started to get to grips with her own style and look, and even then she rarely veers away from Topshop coordinates

Solange on the other hand is so unique, original, fresh, bright and colourful. She likes to rock her natural hair which really makes her a good role model for black and mixed race women who may not be so confident about wearing their natural afro curls (i.e Me). And that’s something I’ve always found jarring about Beyonce, that she insists on dying her hair an unnatural blonde. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve longed for blonde white hair when I should have been looking to Solange for my hairspiration.

What I love about Solange is her absolute undying love for colour. Her utmost favourite colour at a guess would be yellow. Which she looks divine in, but most recently she’s taken to another citrus shade – orange.

Her performance at the first weekend of Coachella was mostly talked about because of the surprise (and pretty awesome) appearance of her ridiculously famous sister. But what really caught my eye was that head to toe orange look, which inspired my latest list for Shopcade.

Beyonce does a Rihanna, cuts off all her hair

I don’t know how to feel about Beyonce removing her weave cutting off her hair.

She debuted her new pixie crop on Instagram with a few artsy images, at first I’m all like oh god what has she done. Then I’m all like, wait didn’t Rihanna just do this?

Beyonce may not have gone as far as Rihanna and let her natural curls shine through, she’s still kept it straight and relaxed, but I can’t help thinking it’s aged her just a little bit…

Don’t get me wrong, I worship Beyonce, some might say it’s getting a bit weird. But the new ‘do I’m not so sure of, just because I know that as soon as the next leg of her tour begins she’s going to have that weave put right back on so she can swish and head bounce along to her songs.

But this is by far the most drastic thing Beyonce has done in relation to her hair. Maybe she knew she needed to keep up with her peers and update herself.

Good god, now I know what all Miley Cyrus’ fans felt like when she cut her off. Maybe I will grow to like it if she sticks with it and rocks it like I know she can.

It’s all in the hairography…

Rihanna has natural hair cue the backlash

Not an hour goes by that there isn’t a ‘news’ story on Rihanna.

Favourite topics are Rihanna’s lack of clothing, Rihanna’s tardiness, Rihanna’s fondness for smoking pot, Rihanna and he who shall not be named, Rihanna’s hair, oh and Rihanna’s music.

Rihanna’s well known for her ever changing hairstyles so it came as a shock when yesterday she debuted her natural hair on Instagram.

@badgalriri Instagram©

@badgalriri Instagram©

We’ve seen her with curls, and super short hair but it was either a weave or chemically relaxed so what a difference it makes to see Rihanna with her natural curls.

I’ve always strived to get my hair long and perfectly waved, and the celebrities out there that have unlimited access to the best weaves and wigs around strikes me down with jealousy. Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and Lauren Conrad all posses the hair I want, but abut 75% of the time it’s all fake.

I think there’s always a certain sort of pressure for black and mixed race celebrities to showcase their natural hair, but even when they some celebrities get attacked and I’m not ashamed to admit I gave Raven Symone a hard time  when she performed with her natural hair a couple of years ago.

Solange Knowles got a lot of grief when she wore her natural afro with people claiming she needed a ‘twist out’ because it didn’t look right. I bow down to Solange and her confidence at wearing her natural afro she says that her “hair is not very important to me… so I don’t encourage it to be important to you”.

Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles

But Rihanna, the biggest celebrity in the world has gone au naturel, will there be the same backlash that Solange received? Will there be another natural hair debate or will Rihanna inspire her fans to embrace their natural hair and give themselves a break from trying to be like her and be themselves?

Solange Knowles makes me want my natural hair back, but I’ve gone so far over to the dark side of chemical relaxing that the only way to ever get it back would be to shave it and start again – I don’t think I would survive.

Before I found the chemicals...

MET Gala 2013 ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’

When the theme of this year’s Costume Institute Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET Gala) was announced as ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ I was excited. This would be an actual event with costumes, surely?

Oh of course not, this is the fashion world dah-ling, couture has to be the order of the day and if Anna Wintour is the head of the chair organising this shindig then you must obey!

This would definitely be a chance for the Brits to shine on the red carpet, punk originated from London surely we are the ones who truly know how to do punk. So it is pretty disappointing to see, then, certain Brit celebrities throwing on a studded leather jacket and calling it an ode to punk Sienna Miller…

There were rumours abound in the lead up to the MET Gala that female celebrities were worried about not looking ‘pretty’ and didn’t want to be too edgy for fear of ending up on that unforgiving worst dressed list. This is probably the only event where you could go for that outlandish look and get away with it all in the name of punk.

Anna Wintour on the other hand attended a different MET Gala, her invite included the sub text ‘punk also means floral’. What person could possibly interpret floral Chanel Couture with even a possible edge of punk? She even shoehorned the pregnant Kim Kardashian into that god awful floral Givenchy floral curtain. Kim K is trying so hard to please everyone around her she really appears as though she hasn’t got a mind of her own, I feel sorry for her because Kanye just seems like he’s regretting his choice of baby mamma…

Those who I favoured on the red carpet at the MET Gala are the ones who embraced the theme of the punk:

Anne Hathaway, after the huge disappointment of the Oscars, she by far was my favourite look of the night. Wearing sheer black Valentino, she made the look super edgy by dying her hair peroxide blonde and slicking it back with a messy quiff. As soon as I saw the full look this was what I wanted, what I was expecting on the red carpet. Absolutely 10/10, the naughty boob flashing, the cut out shape and just clear sexiness of the whole look was Sharon Stone uh-may-zing. You go girl.

Another person who embodied the drama was Nicole Richie, she’s yet to truly let me down on a red carpet and her somewhat simple embellished white custom Topshop gown was accessorised with vampy lipstick and a shock of white hair. I think the punk horror look totally works.

At first glance Sarah Jessica Parker is wearing a voluminous patterned Giles gown, but scan to the top and she is adorned with a custom made Philip Treacy mohawk inspired head piece. It is simply jaw-dropping. And only something that SJP could work so perfectly, she later revealed her thigh high laced boots which just added to punk glam factor. Well done SJP, you have been reborn!

Elizabeth Banks was the guest of Brian Atwood so her super short Versace gold tuxedo jacket perfectly showcased her amazing fringed heels. This is the definition of glam punk, gold gold and sexy.

Nina Dobrev never fails to amaze me on the red carpet, there are some looks that I like more that others, but she always comes out on the best dressed list everytime. This Monique Lhuillier creation gives Nina the punk attitude, and she was one of the few that wore trousers, I like the fact that it came with the detachable tulle skirt because it was still high glamour but allowed her to party on without it at the MET after party still looking fierce.

Oh Beyonce, for the second year running the star chose a Givenchy Couture gown and yet another showstopper. I can see this dress been like marmite for some, I love the train of fire it is matches her personality perfectly, the bustier is super tight but the snakeskin material just makes it even more dramatic. She also chose to wear gloves similar to Kim K’s design but by showing her décolletage it allowed for a break in the heavy pattern, and her wavy tresses and smoky make up were the perfect addition.

I’m adding Emma onto this list simply because it is not a short printed mini dress. Yes there are still cutouts but she looks so different here, I would have liked to have seen some more attitude in her make up and shoes but this Prabal Gurung gown is a great graduation from red carpet princess.

Of all the people on the guest list we knew Florence Welch would bring in for the Brits, she has always worked a gothic edge to her red carpet dressing and it worked well here. Her Givenchy Couture fringed and velvet gown is dramatic, not necessarily punk but definitely chaotic, and her fiery red hair makes the whole look stand out.

Diane Kruger went that extra step and added a pink dip to the end of her blonde ponytail, it elevates her look along with her dark smoky make up. The Chanel Couture gown with overlay is certainly better than her purple feathered Prada gown from last year and she proved that the Chanel collection wasn’t all flowers like Anna Wintour’s dress did. Top effort, and as always had the perfect accessory with her in Joshua Jackson.

Ever since Miley Cyrus chopped off her hair, she’s been channelling the grungy punk look. She’s a young girl not afraid of pushing the fashion boundary and so she shouldn’t be, I hate all those naysayers out there that hated on her for cutting her hair off just like they did with Karlie Kloss why do people have such an issue with short hair not being attractive or sexy?! Her Marc Jacobs dress skimmed Miley’s very toned body it was still glamourous with the added punk jewellery and her spiked up hair. The hair might not have been to everybody’s taste and she could have benefitted from it being slicked back but who cares she took a risk at a punk themed event!

I really like Jaime King’s custom Topshop suit, when I first saw her I thought she looked ten years younger maybe it’s something to do with those hair extensions and her model good looks. Jaime has such fun with fashion she never sticks to the same thing so I enjoyed seeing her in this satin trouser suit with a lace bodice top underneath. Topshop do great red carpet looks, if the rest of their guests including my favourite Ashley Madekwe in what she called punk mermaid, and even donned a black bob wig to make it all edgy.

At first when I saw Carey Mulligan in her Balenciaga dress, I thought it wasn’t enough but then as you see all the other stars and their interpretations on what punk is Carey fits in perfectly. Her knee length gown with a safety pin attached at the lapel worked with the understated cut outs on the side. I do think though that as someone who has a massive movie coming out that she shouldn’t have let Anne Hathaway upstage her.

I really can’t make my mind up on Cameron Diaz’s Stella McCartney gown. I’m like a magpie to this colour, I love it. At first when I saw a picture I thought she looked a bit like a nun, but then after seeing the back and studying it a bit more I do think it is a very original creation which Stella does so well when making custom creations for her friends especially with the addition of that spiked gold belt. So I like it but I kind of don’t.

The back view of the dress which is more like a cape than fully covered.

And then there was Madonna (aka Hilary Devey). Only she would translate punk to mean HOT MESS. She rocked up late to the MET Gala red carpet in Givenchy, but not just any Givenchy a checked studded jacket with horrible gloves, horrible ripped fishnet tights, with horrible suspenders, a horrible wig, and horrible shoes.

And as far as I’m aware, nobody wore Alexander McQueen I though some of their creations would have definitely appeared on this red carpet without a doubt even if  they did dedicate the 2011 gala to him.

Best of the rest:

Trailer: The Great Gatsby

I was always going to be a lover of a big glossy blockbuster movie adapted from a classic novel. I do admit, however, I’m only halfway through F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby after giving myself the task to read it before it was released, so I’m not entirely sure of how it ends.

Baz Luhrmann’s latest extravaganza looks set to be his biggest and best movie since Moulin Rouge and not forgetting the beautiful Romeo+Juliet. I mean don’t get me wrong he has had other projects in between, such as Australia, it’s just those two movies are what he’s known for.

The great gatsby

With Leonardo DiCaprio the leading man, images of his perfectly portrayed Romeo flash before my eyes, but now he’s left his boyish charms behind and is the ruggedly handsome man playing the titular character, Jay Gatsby. DiCaprio stars alongside Tobey McGuire, whom I’ve always felt kind of blends into the background so it will be interesting to see how he plays his character Nick Carraway; Carey Mulligan (who I find really annoyingly wet) the flapper girl and original love of Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, who is now married to big bad Joel Edgerton’s Tom Buchanan.

There are some big name stars in this movie but it will be all eyes on DiCaprio for me, I genuinely love the anticipation that comes with a DiCaprio movie and I’ve been dying for The Great Gatsby release ever since it got pushed back from a Christmas 2012 release date to May 16, of this year.

With the movie set to open the Cannes Film Festival, I am dying to see who will be walking that glamourous red carpet. Jay-Z is at the helm of the movie’s original soundtrack, and we’ve already heard a taster of what the music will be like so I am expecting Beyonce to accompany him if they attend. And I am expecting big things from Carey Mulligan red carpet wardrobe, we know that Muiccia Prada designed her Gatsby costumes so I would imagine the press tour to be full of high-end pieces with dash of couture thrown in for good measure.

Here’s the new full trailer for The Great Gatsby, featuring original music from Florence + The Machine, Lana del Ray, and Beyonce and Andre 3000’s (some may say) controversial Back to Black cover:
