Single? My Top Five Rom-Coms to make you feel good.

Bruce Willis only just found out a few weeks ago what a ‘rom-com’ was and he’s been in the film industry for about 30 years. That says a lot for you guys.

Definition of Rom-com: A romantic-comedy film where normally a guy tries to woo a girl in several different and funny ways until the girl falls in love with him and they live happily ever after. Every girl will list at least one as a film she loves because one day no matter how much we lie to ourselves we hope that it will be us with the happy ending, and every guy has seen a rom-com with the hope of getting lucky.

In honour of one of my favourite rom-coms reaching its 10th anniversary and also because its Valentine’s Day, and who’s not to say I’m going to sit in tonight with cup of hot chocolate and watch How to Lose A Guy In 10 Days therefore fulfilling every female stereotype there ever was?

My top 5 Rom-Coms to make you feel so good about yourself and your single life:

1. Never Been Kissed [1999]

Everyone roots for the underdog, and Drew Barrymore plays Josie, a journalist who enrolls herself back in high school. The ending is probably the best as it leaves you on tenterhooks as you wait to find out if she ever gets that first kiss.

2. How to Lose A Guy In 10 Days [2003]

Celebrating it’s tenth anniversary this year, Kate Hudson is at her best as Andie Anderson and the handsome Matthew McConaughey as Benjamin Barry. Ben makes a bet that he can make a girl fall in love with him in 10 days to land a prestigious advertising account unbeknownst to the girl his colleagues pick, Andie, a columnist who is writing an article on How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It’s a rom-com at its best, and includes possibly the most amazing dress and piece of jewellery ever.

3. The Notebook [2004]

Only watch this if you feel like weeping. Ryan Gosling will always carry a bit of Noah with him, which is probably why he’s so dreamy.

4. Going the Distance [2010]

Everyone tries to do the long distance relationship, sometimes it works other times it fails spectacularly. This movie obviously proves that when you are Drew Barrymore (as another journalist, I sense a theme here) and Justin Long you are destined to make things work, only in the movie though they broke up in real life, in several hilarious encounters, one that involves sex on a dinner table and lots of music mainly that of The Boxer Rebellion.

5. Dirty Dancing [1987]

I know people that have not seen this movie, which is a travesty, a crime against females and rom-coms the world over. How can you not love Jennifer Grey’s innocent Baby and Patrick Swayze’s bad boy Johnny Castle, both come together to learn a dance that will turn her from a girl to a woman. The ultimate star-crossed lovers, everybody dreams of the perfect holiday romance. Just nobody mention Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights, please.

  1. Great list. I personally really like the romantic comedy genre and am always looking for films with a new spin on it. I really liked “Going the Distance” in 2010 (I think it was my favorite rom-com of that year). Im also a big fan of 2011’s “Beginners”, 2012’s “Silver Lining’s Playbook” and “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”, and 2013’s “Warm Bodies”.
