MET Gala 2013 ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’

When the theme of this year’s Costume Institute Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET Gala) was announced as ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ I was excited. This would be an actual event with costumes, surely?

Oh of course not, this is the fashion world dah-ling, couture has to be the order of the day and if Anna Wintour is the head of the chair organising this shindig then you must obey!

This would definitely be a chance for the Brits to shine on the red carpet, punk originated from London surely we are the ones who truly know how to do punk. So it is pretty disappointing to see, then, certain Brit celebrities throwing on a studded leather jacket and calling it an ode to punk Sienna Miller…

There were rumours abound in the lead up to the MET Gala that female celebrities were worried about not looking ‘pretty’ and didn’t want to be too edgy for fear of ending up on that unforgiving worst dressed list. This is probably the only event where you could go for that outlandish look and get away with it all in the name of punk.

Anna Wintour on the other hand attended a different MET Gala, her invite included the sub text ‘punk also means floral’. What person could possibly interpret floral Chanel Couture with even a possible edge of punk? She even shoehorned the pregnant Kim Kardashian into that god awful floral Givenchy floral curtain. Kim K is trying so hard to please everyone around her she really appears as though she hasn’t got a mind of her own, I feel sorry for her because Kanye just seems like he’s regretting his choice of baby mamma…

Those who I favoured on the red carpet at the MET Gala are the ones who embraced the theme of the punk:

Anne Hathaway, after the huge disappointment of the Oscars, she by far was my favourite look of the night. Wearing sheer black Valentino, she made the look super edgy by dying her hair peroxide blonde and slicking it back with a messy quiff. As soon as I saw the full look this was what I wanted, what I was expecting on the red carpet. Absolutely 10/10, the naughty boob flashing, the cut out shape and just clear sexiness of the whole look was Sharon Stone uh-may-zing. You go girl.

Another person who embodied the drama was Nicole Richie, she’s yet to truly let me down on a red carpet and her somewhat simple embellished white custom Topshop gown was accessorised with vampy lipstick and a shock of white hair. I think the punk horror look totally works.

At first glance Sarah Jessica Parker is wearing a voluminous patterned Giles gown, but scan to the top and she is adorned with a custom made Philip Treacy mohawk inspired head piece. It is simply jaw-dropping. And only something that SJP could work so perfectly, she later revealed her thigh high laced boots which just added to punk glam factor. Well done SJP, you have been reborn!

Elizabeth Banks was the guest of Brian Atwood so her super short Versace gold tuxedo jacket perfectly showcased her amazing fringed heels. This is the definition of glam punk, gold gold and sexy.

Nina Dobrev never fails to amaze me on the red carpet, there are some looks that I like more that others, but she always comes out on the best dressed list everytime. This Monique Lhuillier creation gives Nina the punk attitude, and she was one of the few that wore trousers, I like the fact that it came with the detachable tulle skirt because it was still high glamour but allowed her to party on without it at the MET after party still looking fierce.

Oh Beyonce, for the second year running the star chose a Givenchy Couture gown and yet another showstopper. I can see this dress been like marmite for some, I love the train of fire it is matches her personality perfectly, the bustier is super tight but the snakeskin material just makes it even more dramatic. She also chose to wear gloves similar to Kim K’s design but by showing her décolletage it allowed for a break in the heavy pattern, and her wavy tresses and smoky make up were the perfect addition.

I’m adding Emma onto this list simply because it is not a short printed mini dress. Yes there are still cutouts but she looks so different here, I would have liked to have seen some more attitude in her make up and shoes but this Prabal Gurung gown is a great graduation from red carpet princess.

Of all the people on the guest list we knew Florence Welch would bring in for the Brits, she has always worked a gothic edge to her red carpet dressing and it worked well here. Her Givenchy Couture fringed and velvet gown is dramatic, not necessarily punk but definitely chaotic, and her fiery red hair makes the whole look stand out.

Diane Kruger went that extra step and added a pink dip to the end of her blonde ponytail, it elevates her look along with her dark smoky make up. The Chanel Couture gown with overlay is certainly better than her purple feathered Prada gown from last year and she proved that the Chanel collection wasn’t all flowers like Anna Wintour’s dress did. Top effort, and as always had the perfect accessory with her in Joshua Jackson.

Ever since Miley Cyrus chopped off her hair, she’s been channelling the grungy punk look. She’s a young girl not afraid of pushing the fashion boundary and so she shouldn’t be, I hate all those naysayers out there that hated on her for cutting her hair off just like they did with Karlie Kloss why do people have such an issue with short hair not being attractive or sexy?! Her Marc Jacobs dress skimmed Miley’s very toned body it was still glamourous with the added punk jewellery and her spiked up hair. The hair might not have been to everybody’s taste and she could have benefitted from it being slicked back but who cares she took a risk at a punk themed event!

I really like Jaime King’s custom Topshop suit, when I first saw her I thought she looked ten years younger maybe it’s something to do with those hair extensions and her model good looks. Jaime has such fun with fashion she never sticks to the same thing so I enjoyed seeing her in this satin trouser suit with a lace bodice top underneath. Topshop do great red carpet looks, if the rest of their guests including my favourite Ashley Madekwe in what she called punk mermaid, and even donned a black bob wig to make it all edgy.

At first when I saw Carey Mulligan in her Balenciaga dress, I thought it wasn’t enough but then as you see all the other stars and their interpretations on what punk is Carey fits in perfectly. Her knee length gown with a safety pin attached at the lapel worked with the understated cut outs on the side. I do think though that as someone who has a massive movie coming out that she shouldn’t have let Anne Hathaway upstage her.

I really can’t make my mind up on Cameron Diaz’s Stella McCartney gown. I’m like a magpie to this colour, I love it. At first when I saw a picture I thought she looked a bit like a nun, but then after seeing the back and studying it a bit more I do think it is a very original creation which Stella does so well when making custom creations for her friends especially with the addition of that spiked gold belt. So I like it but I kind of don’t.

And then there was Madonna (aka Hilary Devey). Only she would translate punk to mean HOT MESS. She rocked up late to the MET Gala red carpet in Givenchy, but not just any Givenchy a checked studded jacket with horrible gloves, horrible ripped fishnet tights, with horrible suspenders, a horrible wig, and horrible shoes.

And as far as I’m aware, nobody wore Alexander McQueen I though some of their creations would have definitely appeared on this red carpet without a doubt even if  they did dedicate the 2011 gala to him.

She walked the People’s Choice Awards 2013 red carpet in LA last night wearing a very familiar looking Peter Pilotto dress and shoes. Cast your memory back to the MTV Movie Awards in June of last year and there she is wearing an edgy Peter Pilotto dress with strikingly similar shoes.

And after a recently disappointing front cover on Marie Claire UK, I think it’s time Emma injected some life and excitement into her look. I know it’s hard to grow out a hairstyle, her dramatic pixie crop back in 2010 after Harry Potter ended won me over in the end but now she’s at the awful inbetween stage. Most stars would add extensions just to give their hair some va va voom, which I think would be a good idea for Emma as every time she appears on the red carpet their is always something lacking in her overall look.

Everyone knows she can do better than this. She needs to make a mark and really needs to shed that bubblegum image, come on Emma!

Kristen Stewart Best Dressed?

Saying that Kristen Stewart is best dressed of 2012 is like saying Katie Holmes had a stellar career last year and has become the best actress EVER.

Even though we’re only four months into this year Glamour UK have announced their voted by readers annual best dressed celebs of 2012 and K-Stew has topped the list knocking Emma Watson from the coveted top spot.

In my opinion for someone to be best dressed you need to be an all-rounder, your red carpet style has to be translated to your street style aka Miranda Kerr, glamour has to be present in some form or another and if you saw K-Stew at Coachella the other weekend you would simply assume she had her wardrobe stolen and bought a cap from a trucker named Bubba.

Don’t get me wrong I have nothing against Converse, denim , or slouchy tees but when this is what you consistently wear, it’s no wonder the rumour that not one stylist wants to work with you goes around Tinseltown. I would also hope in the near future that she invest in some dry shampoo or a shower to wash her greasy hair, effort please!

This Stella McCartney look for Paul McCartney's My Valentine video premiere is doing absolutely nothing for her, that skirt is the wrong length the blazer tsk, and that hair needs a good wash.

There are those rare occasions that K-Stew steps onto the red carpet looking an absolute dream, i.e Breaking Dawn Part One premiere in J. Mendel and Roberto Cavalli and there is the upcoming appearance at Cannes Film Festival to promote her latest film On The Road so we could see some really impressive looks from her if she has an uber stylist in her entourage. Fingers crossed we get to see some great Summer 2012 looks.

Also Robert Pattinson scooped best dressed male, needless to say these two are a perfectly matched pair, because according to a Coachella-goer on Instagram he looked like a homeless British guy. How he managed to be placed first I have no idea. Come on Glamour sort it out! I am adding to this because Editor Jo Elvin has just pointed out that it is voted by Glamour readers, I am a Glamour reader maybe I should pull my finger out and put pen to paper next time they do the list because clearly the majority are a bit dim!!

What is age appropriate?

So many women in celeb land like to wear provocative clothing to get column inches, to promote their movies or products they happen to be endorsing at that moment. It’s the way to catch attention, to look smokin’ hot (or a hot mess) and news outlets and gossip sites pick up on it straight away and voila you’re the talk of the week!

But how do you dress whilst still grabbing those headlines and be “age appropriate”?

There are plenty of young teen actresses out there finding their feet in Hollywoodland, from Elle and (the slightly older) Dakota Fanning, Chloe Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld, and Abigail Breslin. I say finding their feet, it isn’t as if they are stumbling around like Emma Watson in her early Hermione days, they are decked head to toe in fashion houses like Miu Miu, Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu and Proenza Schouler.

But as many fashion critics are so quick to point out, some of them are not adhering to this apparent rule of age appropriate styling.

Case in point, Chloe Moretz, she’s flashed up on a plethora of red carpets this past year as she promoted her movies Let Me In, Hick and the recent Martin Scorcese 3D epic children’s fantasy movie Hugo. In my opinion she is doing much better than poor old Emma ever did, of course she has a stylist’s assistance but I think Chloe is head strong in her fashion choices much like Elle Fanning is in hers.

The main outfit that I think sparked the “age appropriate” debate was the Valentino dress Chloe chose for the premiere of Hick at the Toronto Film Festival back in September. I admit it is sexy for someone who is only 14, the tight leather and sheer top half even if she is covered up, but if this is what was on offer to her from the designers and for no one to tell her any different then why wouldn’t she pick it. But it’s not as if she is Lindsay Lohan, so why get all huffy about it?

I move onto another outfit that has been deemed appropriate for someone Chloe’s age, a Miu Miu coat dress from their Resort 2012 collection. It’s still short, and she still has bare legs, but because she’s added a sparkly brooch to her hair and it covers her chest it is all fine. Another one, this time Chloe dons an amazing pair of Stella McCartney lace leggings and a leather jacket, why is this so age appropriate? It would be easy to say that the leggings were too tight and she shouldn’t be wearing heels. A Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2011 dress is adorable and cutesy, but still features a lace see-through top half and fitted skirt.

Elle Fanning seems to be popular on the best dressed lists, her quirky dress sense wins fashion critics’ votes over Chloe nearly everytime they are pitted against each other. Quirky is apparently age appropriate, but some of her outfits are odd and ironically ageing, however never wrong because she’s young and just experimenting.

I then must go to the other end of the spectrum, critics take a pass at younger ones for dressing more maturely in a sexy way or more maturely in a too covered up prim and proper way, can they ever win? But what about Helen Mirren (67) in Dolce & Gabbana or Elle Macpherson (47) in Herve Leger for Max Azria?

And who could possibly forget Madonna at the Oscars Vanity Fair after party? (And just because she’s Madonna she cannot possibly justify dressing so horrifically)

Harry Potter: The End

I wasn’t prepared with a handful of tissues when I went to see Harry Potter The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, how stupid really considering when I read the book 4 years ago I could barely see a word on the page through my floods of tears.

The film was nothing less than epic, I know in the past I’ve sat there muttering to myself that this part is wrong and that didn’t happen and how very irritating that is to my friends who would just like to enjoy the movie (ha). But this was very well done, smoothly transitioning from Part 1 to Part 2 with the necessary recap of Voldemort stealing the Elder Wand from the lifeless body of Dumbledore.

That scene does effectively set the tone for the rest of the movie, the dark cinematography for the location shoots and added post-production in the CGI scenes, the characters’ costumes and make up full of literal blood, sweat and tears as they fight their impending doom, the destruction of major sets such as the Great Hall, and the disintegration of Voldemort as the Horcruxes are slowly destroyed.

What you can really see is the emotion within the movie, the main cast including Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint are acting but with the understanding that this really is the end. Each of them in interviews and on the red carpet have admitted how sad they are to be leaving the Harry Potter world after 10 long years, growing up on the set and with the whole team behind the movie around them you can tell that they really care about it and that shows on screen.

A part of me feels like my childhood really has ended, the first book I read at 11 and the last book I read aged 18, the last film seen at 23. What a long time for Harry Potter to be around, and now really a part of literary history borne from JK Rowling. I suppose I can always turn back to one of the books to read and reminisce and feel like a child again. But ultimately there will be no waiting for the next film to come out around my birthday, or another Potter vs Voldemort adventure.

I don’t think I could ever do the movie series justice by giving my opinion, it would take FOREVER, so Harry Potter comes to an end literally but hopefully there will always be pottermore…

MTV Movie Awards vs. CFDA Awards

Two awards shows, two very different crowds. But both one common goal, dress to impress. MTV Movie awards saw plenty of daringly short dresses, embellishment, and casual sexiness. The CFDA Awards were all high fashion bang on trend, colour blocking, sheer and silk materials, super tall models alongside the most notable fashion designers of-the-moment.
