The Screen Actors’ Guild awards happened last night over the pond, and there were plenty of outfits to trawl through today. For me it was a case of the SAGs vs. the Golden Globes, because there were some gorgeous risky dresses at the Globes and some not so risky but still beautiful dresses on display last night.
I’m going to jump straight in and tell you that Rose Byrne in Elie Saab Couture and her perfect bob was my best dressed of the night. Her dazzling jumpsuit was just stunning, and it just goes to prove that the god of red carpet couture NEVER gets it wrong. My second favourite was Emma Stone, one for not choosing a full-length gown and two for the amazing Alexander McQueen horse clutch she was carrying to go with her dress by the designer. Michelle Williams looked gorgeous in red Valentino and so did Kyra Sedgwick in Emilio Pucci.
I’ll put Lea Michele on my best dressed list because she did look fantastic in a grey Atelier Versace dress, but for crying out loud Lea just a peep of your leg and a slight pout will do, none of this “sexy” open mouth or chorus girl posing.
Amber Heard looked smoking hot in a black Zac Posen gown with sexy cutouts. I’m normally against black on the red carpet because there are so many colours out there than safe black but Heard knows how to pose without going all Lea Michele on us. Other stars that chose black were Angelina Jolie in an awfully cheap looking Jenny Packham gown, Stacy Keibler (star by default) in a lace off the shoulder Marchesa gown which I found boring, and Jayma Mays who wore a beaded Reem Acra dress that would have worked on someone with much more star power than the Glee actress.
Also why did Emily Blunt’s Oscar de la Renta green gown look so cheap? For a red head green is the go to colour but this was just not right. SOFIA VERGARA IF YOU DO NOT STOP WEARING STRAPLESS MERMAID GOWNS I WILL BE FORCED TO SCREAM AT YOU. I don’t care if she has an amazing figure try something different. Tilda Swinton, what happened to your Haider Ackermann relationship, as much as I like this Lanvin gown you should not blend into the background! Oh and Kristen Wiig and that choker. Just no.
I think the Globes had more risk takers, better colours, patterns and overall looks, but the SAGs still brought the glam factor, check out the slideshow of all my favourite and a few not so favourite looks below…
I refer you to my post on the Golden Globes 2011, where I was extremely disappointed in the dresses, very few celebs displayed any show stoppers and it was a struggle to form a best-dressed list.
However this year was very different… the stylists stepped up their game by a long shot. I think last year has been vaporized into oblivion by this years array of stunning gowns.
My one to watch last year was Michelle Williams, and again this year I’ve really enjoyed seeing her red carpet choices leading up to the Globes. She’d been sticking to a palette of monochrome and so I was hoping for some colour and I was not disappointed, Michelle demonstrated that understated glamour she is so good at (ignoring the Valentino from last year) with a purple velvet Jason Wu column dress and picked up the award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe. 9/10

Evan Rachel Wood was my favourite of the night, she is never afraid of wearing a show-stopper and this Gucci Premiere gown was simply beautiful. She reminds me of a mermaid, with feathers. 9.5/10

Dianna Agron wasn’t featured prominently on any best/worst dressed lists, I suppose her star power is still at a B- for a television actress, but her red laser cut Giles dress is a star to me. Very reminiscent of the Marchesa dress that Rachel McAdams wore at Cannes but edgier. I think it would have worked even better if it didn’t have the slight train and was cut with a flare at the ankle. 8/10

I loved Claire Danes‘ neon pink Calvin Klein from last years Golden Globes, this year she picked a monochrome J. Mendel dress. I loved it but I think that’s because of the back, I’m a lover of bare backs and this was a hit purely for that reason and the red lips. Still she went on to pick up the Globe for Best Actress in a TV Drama for the epic show that is Homeland, congratulations. 7.5/10

Kudos to Paula Patton for daring to wear THE brightest dress ever made. Her sunshine yellow Monique Lhullier dress showed Sarah Michelle Gellar how to do the designer the correct way. Honestly, SMG turned up in a godawful inky blue and white dress with a huge bustle around the waist which just totally overwhelmed her and then she made the excuse that her daughter Charlotte picked it out… Yeah put the blame on the innocent child poor thing. SMG gets a ridiculously low -2/10 whilst Paula shines with 7/10.

Salma Hayek looked gorgeous in Gucci, I don’t think I’d be able to guess how old she is when she busts out a dress like this. Sleek and sexy, gorgeous but no mutton. An easy 8/10.

As a rule to myself I never EVER include Tilda Swinton on any lists, because she is a force of her own making. An individualist at heart she just refuses to conform. This time however her Golden Globes outfit was by no means extreme nor was it simple and boring, but a light blue Haider Ackermann creation which she carried off without breaking a sweat. I really liked the styling, the matching cuffs and quiffy ice blonde hair (it’s like she’s always the White Queen) , an icy 7/10.

The best of the rest include:
A stunning Kate Beckinsale who really doesn’t seem to age in Roberto Cavalli a graceful 8/10.
Katherine McPhee in a shock horror mid-length gown by Donna Karan. A refreshing change but the colour was a bit drab 6.5/10.
Nicole Richie is a favourite of mine, I liked her Julien Macdonald dress but I didn’t love it, the bling was fantastic though 7/10.
Madeleine “Victoria” Stowe, the Revenge actress didn’t scoop any awards but looked electric in a cornflower blue Vera Wang custom creation 7.5/10.
Although I don’t favour this dress on Lea Michele because she just sexed it up way too much, the pose, the smoky eye it just doesn’t sit right. I love the green cocktail ring and the dress itself but really not her, one day she will do something simple and understated and will still look amazing, a stingy 6/10.
Diane Lane really shows everyone else how to do it, the actress looked elegant in a gold embellished Reem Acra gown 8.5/10.
Emma Stone’s Lanvin gown kind of underwhelmed me, I love her and the make up was gorgeous but I was expecting something showstopping, maybe she’s saving it for when she’s nominated, 6.5/10.
Mila Kunis rocked up in a black Dior dress, she looked nice but clearly was there in a supporting capacity and not to steal the scene, a lacklustre 6.5/10.
I was really on the fence with Jessica Biel’s choice of Elie Saab Couture. He makes THE best red carpet dresses and she chose this? It’s kind of old lady up top with this beautiful skirt. Sort it out Jess you’re not going to wear this at your wedding I hope, 5.5/10.
I would like to say to Nicole Kidman to get rid of the long hair and tight dresses, and wear something that makes you look your age and not a tacky wannabe. 3/10 just because it’s Versace.

So it appears my tickets got lost in the post this year, maybe next year…
Instead I spent some (I won’t say most or all because this would be lame) of the weekend monitoring Twitter for Comic-Con updates, so easy when people hash tag or you know specific users that were there. My favourite being @cadlymack a writer for television/movie site Zap2it, I was directed to her through a fellow (US) tv lover, she has a dog named Pacey who is adorable and that may say everything about her (loves Dawson’s Creek obvs) and she is like best buds with all the cast in the Vampire Diaries so cool.
A little Pacey-aside, that was the Funny or Die video that Josh Jackson did at last year’s Comic Con. But once again if you’re not a fan of Dawson’s Creek I’m afraid you just won’t GET IT.
Right on with it…
Fringe – At the end of the last season we effectively see Peter disappear. As in he no longer exists. WTF was my reaction after the season finale but at the Comic Con panel Josh Jackson reassured the fans that he had plenty to do whilst dressed as an Observer… Perhaps as this is the only way he could exist outside of time? (See the very end of the video below)
Supernatural – I massively gasped at hearing Alona Tal was returning as Jo, when we all saw her die in Season 5… Although we did get a glimpse of how life could have been with Ellen and Jo still alive in Season 6 episode My Heart Will Go On. Jared Padelecki talked about how difficult it was playing Soulless Sam, Demon-blood Sam and the recovering normal Sam and how Jensen Ackles is like Dean only in the way they both “air-guitar all the time”. J-squared banter I. Love. It.
Vampire Diaries – What’s in store for Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Caroline (Candice Accola)… Ian Somerhalder replies with “Puppies… little vampire puppies”. I switched my allegiance from Stefan to Damon half way through the last season (or is that from Paul Wesley to Ian Somerhalder after I found out the former was married to Torrey deVitto aka Melissa PLL) and so I’m dying for an Elena/Damon hook up but as it’s reported at Comic Con they are too preoccupied with finding Stefan who has gone on a bloody hunt with Klaus boohoo.
Ringer – Sarah Michelle Gellar returns. Yes one of the newly scheduled shows for the Fall Premiere season, is Ringer a show about stolen identity. It looks so good I’m already addicted and that’s only from the trailer, and an extended version was shown at Comic Con. My favourite line being: “Siobhan we have a problem, Bridget’s still alive”. Oooo cannot wait.
True Blood – Apart from witches, Eric losing his memory there’s THAT shower scene. The one from the book with Eric and Sookie together at last, no more Bill (woo). And if you’re watching TB as it is on in the US, you will have seen the near naked torso of Alcide (Joe Manganiello) and the near naked torso of Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) in the same scene *faints*.
Mmm...
So that’s a bit from television, now for the movies. My first “oh well that’s not what I expected” comes in the form of the posters from Snow White and the Huntsman, featuring Kristen Stewart in full body armour and holding a sword. A SWORD? No red lips and short people whistling while they work in this movie… Unlike the rival movie Snow White featuring Lily Collins as the damsel in distress, which one are you going to be a fan of? When I first heard Kristen Stewart was to be cast as Snow White I think smoke may have come out of my ears, but now seeing the posters and the way the film looks I think I could get on board, maybe its the sickly sweet look of Lily Collins that’s putting me off.
Kristen Stewart as Snow White
Lily Collins as Snow White
Kristen Stewart was at Comic Con along with all the cast from Twilight, there to promote part four of the series Breaking Dawn Part 1. A lot of love went out to Kristen, Rob and Taylor obviously, some questionable looks coming from Rob’s half shaven head and Kristen’s usual lack of making an effort. Some of the honeymoon scenes were shown from the movie, I don’t want to hunt them out myself as I’d like them to be a surprise for when I turn up at the midnight showing of the November release (geek). I’ve seen an image of the honeymoon, with Edward and Bella in the water near a waterfall… don’t remember that being mentioned in the book.
The official ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ trailer was premiered at the Comic Con panel, I watched it and felt strangely transported to 2002. Yes the new reboot seems serious, less Toby Maguire-comical more Andrew Garfield-moody with a pinch of Emma Stone-delight thrown in. But it still looks the same. The same suit, the same backdrop, with a slightly different way of Peter Parker getting bitten by that elusive spider. There is no way to really change up Spider-Man once it’s already been done, this seems to be a “re-do” of the Toby Maguire series that it will inevitably be compared to. Hopefully the sequel will head in a different direction if Gwen Stacy is the main love interest and the villain is different? I’m not entirely convinced, but I will still go and see it. (Also the beginning of the trailer eludes to Peter’s parents and why they had to leave him, maybe potential side plot?)
Cowboys and Aliens had its world premiere over the Comic Con weekend, all the stars turned up for the show and some critics thought it was a “crowd-pleasing summer movie with more wit than most” whilst others were not so appreciative of all the cowboys and aliens in the same film together “[it has] a clumsy touch and zero feel for the intangibles of classic movie westerns”. Now I’m not a fan of westerns, the nearest possible one to the genre I have watched was Wild Wild West with Will Smith and we all know how that played out. It annoys me that a film associated with the name Speilberg should be a reason to go and see it so I’ve been looking for a reason not to go and Robbie Collin (former employee of NOTW) gave me a great one:
She looks smokin’ hot, she’s terribly funny, she’s in Family Guy and she doesn’t care about her image. Mila Kunis is US GQ’s August cover girl, and she is a massive girl crush, Olivia Munn has some competition.
I liked Green Lantern, I’m not entirely familiar with the lore of the comic book history so I couldn’t tell you what was right and what was entirely wrong. I’ll tell you what was right Ryan Reynolds, his star has been on the rise for so long always loitering in the background with B-movie comedies and heart-lighted romances now he’s hit the lead actor role and he did well as Hal Jordan.
His comedic style of acting is very similar in a lot of his movies, but it worked in Green Lantern, there were some moments where you had to laugh out loud it’s all about perfect delivery.
What I would say about the movie as a whole is that the beginning was slow, but slow in the fact it was trying to fill you in in the background of the story that an audience may not necessarily be familiar with so it was needed. But then the action seemed to jump quickly into him being the superhero and saving people and then boom the big-baddie Parallax invaded earth after being set free from it’s prison and then Hal Jordan saved the day.
It was almost too easy to guess what was going to happen, but then I suppose you get what you see on the package a classic superhero adventure movie not trying to disguise its purpose, to entertain and see a character come to life on the big screen.
I’ll move onto the other main reason I wanted to see this movie, Blake Lively. Another rising star, from her turn as Serena Van Der Woodsen on CW’s Gossip Girl, to her minor role in Ben Affleck’s fucking awesome movie The Town she is trying to come on leaps and bounds (and by dating an A-list Hollywood movie star ahem). The problem I have as much as I love her, her style, her hair, her legs, I couldn’t help but watch the Green Lantern and her playing test pilot Carol Ferris and seeing Serena Van Der Woodsen with dark hair and a nicer personality. There was no depth to her character she seemed to be an easy on the eye addition, someone to bring Hal Jordan back down to earth (literally) and to play the purpose of someone he loves and cares for so a villain can kidnap and hold ransom. Standard story line.
The villain who I mentioned earlier is Parallax, a former Guardian of the Green Lantern Corps who feeds on people’s fear. Hmm this sounds familiar… J K Rowling are you are fan of comic books? The weird creature that Parallax became was a floaty head cloaked in the skeletons of the people he consumed fear from, a big fat dementor in comic book form (those of you that haven’t read/seen Harry Potter, sod off somewhere else because you won’t know what I’m talking about). To me the villain seemed pretty unbeatable, like impossibly unbeatable, yet somehow the newest recruit of Green Lantern Corps defeated him using the sun and some energy formed into two aircrafts. What? Too easy. Ah well.
I’m not going to say this is the best movie ever, it doesn’t come to par with X-Men: First Class because it’s different and it’s DC not Marvel. I am looking forward to seeing where they go with this because it’s easily a 3-movie franchise. Definitely worth a sequel at least, especially after the genius turn from Mark Strong (one of the most underrated actors there is and he’s British) in the secret scene after the credits. We all knew he wanted the ring the Guardians made to try and defeat Parallax, a ring of pure fear but Sinastro didn’t get to wear it well until he slipped it on and turned his suit yellow… Ooo shocker! Oh and I forgot to mention Peter Sarsgaard, he was good, weird but good.
Ahem. Katie Holmes attended the Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future Awards, and won the “Face of the Future” award. How is this even possible apparently she was given the award as recognition of her work in the film industry and the potential to have a long career in Hollywood.
Excuse me but is anyone aware of a successful movie, scrap that ANY movie Katie Holmes has done in the past 5 years? According to a search in IMDb she is best known for Batman Begins, Dawson’s Creek, Go and Pieces of April the latest been Batman in 2005 as Rachel Dawes, a character that everyone knows she lost out to in the sequel to Maggie Gyllenhaal. Sucks to be you in ’05 Katie.
We then know what followed next, her movie career flagging considerably she marries a Hollywood heavyweight in Tom Cruise in 2006 who previous to this made an idiot of himself by jumping up and down on a couch. It’s rumoured amongst the mills that Katie thought her career would be given a huge boost by marrying an A-list actor but not so far, her 2010 film The Romantics went by virtually unnoticed and her up coming R-rated horror Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is unlikely to be received well and probably won’t make that much money being an R-rated not family friendly fright-fest.
So my problem is still how the hell did Max Mara think Katie Holmes was worthy of this “Face of the Future” award? (I wonder if there was a sly donation from the Scientology fund) I know it isn’t the Oscars, Golden Globes or the Baftas but still to be worthy of this when all she ever gets column inches is for yet another fashion disaster or the fact that her child was seen holding a pack of penis sweets is beyond me.
After her Dawson’s Creek days who could have predicted she would have the worst career?! Holmes is just an absolute yawn fest. Her clothes are boring, her acting is boring, and amongst a sea of up and coming actresses some as young as 13 ( Elle Fanning) she’s probably not got a chance in hell.
